Could we have some of those MN good luck vibes tomorrow morning for Mr Berolina please?

He's got his final interview for PhD funding tomorrow. They take about half of the people they interview.

I've been sole earner for 3 years now, during which time dh finished his first degree, started the PhD and ds came along. I've tied myself in knots working around ds and dh (who has been a sahd for the most part, but also done some research unfunded), working as flexibly as I can for time with ds, and feeling guilty about working. My contract runs out in 2 weeks, I'm 14 weeks pg, I've got another job from next month, paying considerably less, it'll be tight but we'll manage. But it would be such an enormous help if he got this funding. Of course he'll look for something else if it doesn't work out, but those of you who know anything about the German labour market atm will know it's cr*p - 10% unemployment and tons of new graduates (at which level he effectively is) working for nothing on 'internships' because they can't find a decently paid job.

Tbh I'm in a right state about this, although it's not even my blimming interview. It would just be so nice not to have the entire financial responsibility, and to know he will actually be able to get this PhD finished - he's done too much to stop now, but is still pretty far from being anywhere near finished, iyswim. Vibes please

Hi!

Relax.

Deep breaths.

The baby will be fine.

Your dh will be fine.

And I really, really hope he gets it. I whinged about the level of my PhD funding, but it was pretty easy to get and lasted 3 years. I feel like a heel now...

Hope you hear from. him soon

finknottle · 15/03/2007 10:53

Have to pick dd up from kg now - back in 30 mins.
Hang in there.

admylin · 15/03/2007 10:55

Well the interview could last atleast an hour (dh's did) and he probably can't find a phone. There seems to be less and less phones that take coins too - bet he hasn't got the right change even if he finds one...take deep breaths!

coppertop · 15/03/2007 10:57

Good luck, Mr B!

admylin · 15/03/2007 10:59

Be proud of yourselves. You atleast found a flat, that was quick! We took ages and searched in all the wrong places and ended up in a flat that is too small so we're searching again. That is one thing off your mind atleast, well done. Have you seen it or did dh go alone?

berolina · 15/03/2007 11:04

on phone to him

PHEEEEEEEW!!!! (did you hear that, finknottle and admylin? )

The interview person didn't say anything about his chances (big selection meeting is next Fri), but they had a very long chat and dh had the impression that it went pretty well - apparently he (interviewer) said some pretty positive things about him and his ideas.

Thank you everyone for keeping me sort-of-calmish

Right, going to meet him off train in 2 hours and take him to lunch.

admylin - we all went, last weekend. Saw a lovely but impracticable one and 2 duds on the Sat, spent the night awake wondering how to make impracticable one work, then saw this one on Sun morning and really liked it.

just seen this - fingers crossed and have a lovely lunch!

JackieNo · 15/03/2007 11:10

Sounds positive.

admylin · 15/03/2007 11:16

Sounds good. When dh got one set of funding they were giving it to 30 candidates out of 160 and his interview was long, went to over an hour which his professor said was a sure yes and he was right. Next Friday let us know!

berolina · 15/03/2007 11:16

I was so sure they were going to let something slip about his chances - the first interviewer did last month (a slightly less important interview).
It's an odd set-up. They have a big selection committee and lots of professors who are associated with them. One of the professors and one member of the committee interviews each candidate, then they thrash it out at the selection meeting.

I hope they let us know next Fri and don't leave it till after the weekend

Your dh is a in scientific research like mine or not? What bugs me is the never ending need to apply for funding. It never stops. Dh's job depends on his boss getting enough funding and on his results of course but last year dh had a project from his boss which diodn't work out so the funding was stopped and luckily his boss could change dh's project to something that sounded new even though it was along the lines of what he'd been doing, sent him to sit in a different lab and carried on where he left off. In between all this dh is applying for his own funding and for jobs elsewhere just incase. Stressfull enough and he has to work such long hours, I've hardly seen him this week!

finknottle · 15/03/2007 11:25

Do you know, cycling back from kindergarten just now, I did hear this distant noise and thought it had an MN note to it...
Glad he sounded so upbeat. Know what you mean about the Friday thing. Makes me laugh that even the much-boasted of Ganztagsschule here finishes at 12 on Fridays.
Enjoy your lunch

berolina · 15/03/2007 11:29

He's in an odd kind of interdisciplinary half-Geistes- half-Naturwissenschaft niche, admylin (so nichey I can't even say what it is in case he's identified) - so not really attracting the big funding bucks and Doktorandanstellen

finknottle - PMSL (but also shaking head in sorrow) at Ganztagsschule finishing at 12 on Fri...

OK, if he'd been in neurology or pharmacology maybe dh could have helped with jobs! Even the advertized ones usually go to someone internally but have to be advertized officially anyway, very unfair to external applicants.

berolina · 26/03/2007 11:23

he got it

hasn't heard 'officially' by letter yet, just on the phone. when he came off the phone and told me I jumped 2 or 3 times for joy (maybe a bad idea at 15 weeks pg but I couldn't help it )

thank you for those MN vibes!!!

SSShakeTheChi · 26/03/2007 11:31

Oh that's great news

Didn't see your thread earlier so you missed out on my good luck vibes. However I'm sending some for the baby anyway

admylin · 26/03/2007 11:35
