Does anybody live near a train line? Is it bad? Do you ever get used to the noise?

We have been looking for a house for a year and now we have finally found this one and it is just PERFECT in every way except.... it is right next to the train line. There are 4 trains per hour in each direction. It is where they go into a tunnel so they are quite noisy. You can't really hear it inside the house but when you open the window in the summer.

Please help, don't know what to do. We really love the house.

My granded used to live in a house with a train line at the bottom of the garden. It was in London so there were trains every few minutes during the day but TBH when we used to stay with him I stopped noticing them after a couple of days.

When we were little we had a train line right at the end of the garden. The noise was awful when we first moved in, but soon we forgot about it. It took me years to get used to living in the next place where there was no train. It was too too quiet! hth

My BIL and SIL live near a train line. It is a commuter line and they are near their village-station so they can hear all the little doors slamming.

They claim they do not notice the trains anymore. In the same way that someone who lives near a busy road does not notice the cars after a while. We do notice it when we visit them. But in fairness we only visit sporadically.

How close to the train line is the house?

If the house is perfect in every way then I would put up with the trains.

We used to live on the flight path of an RAF Tornado Base.We soon got used to that and i can't imagine trains are as noisy.

I grew up in a house that backed on to one of the main lines in/out of Waterloo in SW London. Pretty busy line, but can honestly say that we were all somehow completely oblivious to it. Not so people who came to stay though!

We live in a triangular new build estate. I say triangular because that is the shape of the plot defined by a road and 2 trainlines. They run once every half hour in each direction on each line so 8 an hour and it really isn't a problem, can barely hear them even with the windows open. The house was so fab (4 floors 3 full bathrooms, a playroom etc etc) the fact of the trains was a minor consideration.

i live between a normal line with several trians an hour and a freight line. It is noticable at first but you get used to it, even the work at night doesn't wake us, even in summer. With the windows open or in the garden you can hear them but its not ubearable, you get used to it as you get used to cars going past.

We are about to buy a house by a train line and a couple went past while we were viewing and we hardly noticed them

Whoooosh · 14/03/2007 16:18

I live very close to a train line and was worried when we moved in.
You really do get used to them.

If I am honest, the only time we do notice them is if we are in the garden in the Summer-as this tends to be weekends there are less trains anyway.

If the house is perfect then don't let the trains stop you...

We live 30 secs from a train station. It is a very busy station (many more than 4 an hour - more like 6-10). It is noisier in the summer when the windos are open but I would have no problem buying near a train line again. The prices tend to be a bit cheaper and I genuinely don't notice it any more (have lived there 9 years though).

It is fantastic when you have toddlers/small children as all you need to do is go outside and watch the trains and ds is happy for ages.

MerlinsBeard · 14/03/2007 16:19

Have to point out that the DS's LOVE it!

SIL has a train line behind her house. The living room literally shakes when they go by every 30 minutes. BUT SIL and BIL and kids don't seem to notice, whereas it makes me jump every time

joash · 14/03/2007 16:20

We have a trainline running at the top of our garden. We do notice the occasional one in the summer, but thats probably more to do with them running more (and longer) trains in the holiday season. Otherwise, we have no problem. 99.9% of the time, we don't even hear them.
