What supermarkets let you use money off coupons?

A few years ago I used to be able to go into Asda and hand over money off coupons at the till even if I hadnt bought the item they were for. Then it seemed all the supermarkets stopped accepting them . Whats the current situation? Dont want to embarass myself at the checkout!!

The coupons all have bar codes on these days, so the computer detects that you haven't bought the item, so rejects the coupon. I used to just hand over wads of them years ago. That little money saving trick has long gone due to technology I'm afraid.

ScottishThistle · 12/03/2007 19:12

The Supermarket has to accept one voucher whether you've bought the item or not!!!

justbeme · 12/03/2007 19:20

Why do you say that Scottishthistle?

My Cousin's wife is very educated re Supermarkets & she told me that if you offer one voucher they do have to accept it whether you have bought the item in question or not!...Not sure of in's & outs I'm afraid.

littleducks · 12/03/2007 19:25

tesco accepts all vouchers whether you buy the item or not and sometimes encourage it. eg happy to take pampers vouchers for tesco nappies, but there own vouchers (ones that come with clubcard statement) dont work unless you bought the item.

ScottishThistle · 12/03/2007 19:26

Also, if you notice that an item is priced differently from the price on the shelf...They have to give you the item for free!

littleducks · 12/03/2007 19:31

Scottish thisle thats only tesco im afraid part of their price promise

charliecat · 12/03/2007 19:31

Scottish thistle, the Tescos ploicy has recently changed to double the difference, and tesco do take vouchers if youve brought the thing or not. Work out which Sales Assistants are happy to do it and choose them!

J20BABY · 12/03/2007 19:33

sorry but i don't think they do by law, although most supermarkets will give you it for the price it says on the shelf as a goodwill gesture

ScottishThistle · 12/03/2007 19:35

Ah ok, I stand corrected...I wonder if my Cousin's wife is aware of change in policy!...She got 18 packs of chicken breast for free a couple of weeeks ago!

littleducks · 12/03/2007 19:37

double the difference! oh no, i used to go with two of the same item, get them for free for a penny or so difference

i think the accept voucher thingg stems from the coupon can only be used once eg. in boots i bought nappies two packs fotr £10 or something and i had the whole book of pampers vouchers, the till would accept one voucher for say £1 off but not two even though i had two packs of nappies as the barcode was identical, the assistant offered to scan it as two seperate transactions but that would be more expensive as you loose the two for £10 offer.

J20BABY · 12/03/2007 19:43

i'm not saying they don't do it, i don't know, not got a tesco near me but i know they don't have to

ScottishThistle · 12/03/2007 19:45

My Cousin's wife goes onto websites where they actually tell you what items are priced wrong etc!...I'm sure they've probably cottoned onto it & changed their policy!

justbeme · 12/03/2007 19:58

I remember a while back when trying to use some coupons I was told if I hadnt bought the item then they would only allow coupons up to 10% of the bill (cant remember which store that was at now)

www.moneysavingexpert.co.uk for the wrongly priced items under discounts and vouchers

ScottishThistle · 12/03/2007 20:05

charliecat, that must be the site she goes onm...She also got a free portable tv because it was priced wrong!

charliecat · 12/03/2007 20:10

sounds like MSE

themoon66 · 12/03/2007 20:15

The giving stuff to you free if it's wrongly priced must be a tesco policy thing. The law actually states that the price on a product is merely 'an invitation to treat'... which means it doesn't actually mean they have to stick to that price, so you can go in and haggle if you like I guess.

louiselouise · 14/03/2007 12:36

Tesco and Waitrose are the best for accepting coupons. People hand in coupons from newspapers etc. and get a discount from their shopping even though they haven't bought the item. Policy does vary but as long as you don't hand over coupons totalling more than 10% of the total spend; look for a young lad on the checkout, avoid middle aged women on the checkout, you should be okay

onlyjoking9329 · 14/03/2007 12:42

if you look at the barcode on vouchers if it starts with 99 then you can use it anywhere, tescos is my favorite thou

themoon66 · 14/03/2007 18:12

Ooh that 99 tip is a good one... I must remember that

onlyjoking9329 · 14/03/2007 21:02

also if you look at the barcode numbers say the barcode is 990776010 100 2 ignore the last number but the numbers before it are what the coupon scans at, in above example thats £1 asda made an error on some vouchers a while back, think the voucher said 50p but they scaned at 3.98.
