Where have all the spiders gone? Random thought of the day...........

I have always lived in old stone houses and got used to the autumn spider invasion when they come inside from the cold; at least twice a week there would be a mahoosive hairy long-leggedy beasty to catch and put outside (with a glass & piece of card - I'm a wuss!). We have lived in our current house for 14 months and I realised the other day I don't recall finding any spiders while we have been here, not one, and there are plenty of nooks and crannies for them to get in. Has anyone else found this? Are there just fewer spiders or could it be something environmental?

Was there a cat or a dog there - they often eat them up, and so there may not be a ripe supply of them in the house?

We have two cats but one is stupid and one is lazy. We had the cats at our old house too though, and I remember freaking out over various spider incidents there!

Now you come to mention it, I've not noticed as many spiders as usual this past year

flossie64 · 12/03/2007 14:32

I live in a new build and we seem to have tons of spiders ! Just when you think that there has not been a sighting for a couple of days ,along comes a baby taranula. This usually happens when I have just got DD off to bed and put my feet up to watch the TV.

i did hear something about this a while ago, from memory there's a new predatory spider (from mainland europe?) which is much smaller so you don't notice them. they have eaten most of the rest.

Not had any where near as many big ones here either. Had a medium size one on the wall last night though! Yuk! I soon splatted it! (sorry,i can't stand catching and freeing them!)

Y0rkshirelass · 12/03/2007 14:35

What about grass snakes, then? Where did they go? And crickets?

Y0rkshirelass · 12/03/2007 14:39

Hmmm crickets...... IIRC the spiders in Arachnophobia ate all the crickets....

all the spiders are in my bath

or at least they were last night

buggers

lionheart · 12/03/2007 14:40

That explains that then. I used to love to lie awake in the Summer and listen to them. Blardy spiders.

mommajools · 12/03/2007 14:56

had a spider this morning zoom down from the ceiling on its thread and it touched my nose while i was at the computer! arhh..
but generally dont see spiders here - have a cat

TwoIfBySea · 13/03/2007 21:12

Yorkshirelass, you want to swap houses then? Despite having a cat we do get spiders frequently in the house, horrible scuttling things. Had an experience a few months back when one of the feckers abseiled down onto my neck resulting in me hopping and squealing around the bathroom to the amusement of dh and dts.

Am now getting all itchy at the memory.

My cat won't chase anything that doesn't present itself in front of him and ask to be eaten.
