Just spotted loads of them flying in and out of a hole they have made between the bricks right next to the back door.
Maybe B+Q or Homebase will have something to see them off?

Wasps are buggers JMG - ring your local pest control at the Council - they should send someone out to get rid of them.

Tissy · 05/07/2004 16:15

definitely call the council-you'll have a nest in the cavity, they should be able to deal with it.

DelGirl · 05/07/2004 16:18

eeek JMG - I hate wasps with a passion. Can you call out a pest controller?

lou33 · 05/07/2004 16:21

I wouldn't takle them myself. Get a pest controller in.

Tissy · 05/07/2004 16:22

here is a page by the pest control dept at Birmingham Council. They say you can puff in insecticide and the wasps will carry it into the nest. Alternatively, they charge £50 for eradicating the nest themselves!

Our council (East Ayrshire) did it for free, though, but it was several years ago.

you can buy foam spray (from diy places) to put straight in the hole, ok if there's not too many around, but if there's loads don't chance it and call a pest controller

jmg1 · 05/07/2004 16:43

I have booked council in earliest they can do is Friday - £46. Thanks would not have thought of council.

Will also try myself later today, problem is I have to be very careful I am allergic and last time I got stung it put me in hospital.

I would keep well away in that case jmg.

littlemissbossy · 05/07/2004 17:03

allergic!!! OMG you never said that!! keep well away and close all the windows

jmg1 · 05/07/2004 18:17

Its ok, I got some foam from B&Q got dressed up with big coat hood up, marigolds on hands, tucked my trousers into my socks, basically looked like a nutter and gave the hole a squirt for 4 seconds (supposed to be 8 but they got really pissed off) then did a runner into the house. Some wasps flew around for a bit and now they seem to have gone away.
The dogs were looking at me with that - what are you doing expression or was it are we going for walk.

The mental picture that has conjured up has made me chuckle - those are the times when you don't want to lock yourself out of the house.

lou33 · 05/07/2004 19:59

I would have paid good money to see that jmg. Do you have a camera phone? You could have at least sent me a picture!

jmg1 · 05/07/2004 21:26

I do lou, but you would never have taken me seriously again .
I don't think any neighbours saw me!

Oh poor you! We had a nest last year and the council sprayed it for us. They were gone within hours (the wasps that is). Don't forget to fill the hole the wasps used after about 24 hours so they don't get in again next year.

Jimjams · 05/07/2004 21:42

I rang a few firms when we had one a couple of years ago. Rentokil were hugely expensive and said it needed 2 people, another firm said "ohh no that's too difficult you need specialists" (it was in the roof). Finally I got another local firm- the guy came out and said "what's the problem?" Climbed his ladder, sprayed the nest and they were all gone within a few hours. They charged £35 IIRC- came the same day....

wobblyknicks · 05/07/2004 22:26

jmg - if I say that I don't take you seriously anyway can I have a pic???

(lou, get your purse out - what's it worth for my phone to go 'wrong' and accidentally send it to you?)

Can't wait to see!!!!

coppertop · 08/07/2004 21:08

Are you lurking, jmg? If so, can you tell me what was the name of the stuff you bought? We've got a nasty nest right next to the house, and dh is allergic to the little b*ggers. Help!

Should add that I'm over a foot shorter than dh and extremely squeamish so all advice welcome!

jmg1 · 08/07/2004 21:14

ct, it is called 'Wasp Nest Destroyer Foam' £3.98 from B&Q.
