I think we have discovered the source of DS's stomach upset and temperature

He threw up on Tuesday night. It was awful, smelt foul. Started to get a temperature after that. By the next day it had gone up to 103. Was giving him calpol and nurofen.

The GP gave him a quick once over when I went there with DD that morning. Said he had no ear or throat infection/tonsilitis. I did point out that his breath smelt really bad though. She put it down to a virus.

The temperature remained through the day and he didnt eat. He drank though. His sleep was awful Weds night. Temperature still there. Thursday morning he still wasnt eating much, and in fact, fell asleep sitting up, he was so exhausted.

Im hoping you are still with me.....

So, anyway, his breath was still foul. I could smell it as I walked into his room to get him up from his nap. I looked in his mouth, nothing. Looked up his nose...there was something. Looked like a pea, but lighter. Couldnt reach it with tweezers, so asked DP to check it out when he came home later.

DP rings me at work later to say there is nothing there. Must have been snot .

This morning - still v v bad breath. Really awful, couldnt have his face near me. He now has a white tongue. Much better temp wise and eating a little. Watery diarrhoea though . I've changed his clothes 4 times today. The nappy just isnt holding it in at all.

So, DP comes home from work this afternoon, and, I ask him to look up DS's nose again. So, he gets a torch this time and has a look.

"There's a pea up there" DP announces. So, we lay DS down, and DP gets tweezers and attempts to pull it out. Many nostril hairs and a few struggles later....DP pulls it out.

But, its not a pea, its a foul-smelling, rotting pompom from DDs craft kit. I have never smelt anything like it. Like something had died up there.

So, we think the thing had been festering up there for at least a week, and he has been swallowing infected snot and its upset his stomach. We may be wrong, but, the foul smell has finally gone. (After a bit of a clean up with cotton buds and saline).

Dear God, if I ever smell that smell again I will NOT leave it a couple of days before investigating.

Will DS have learnt his lesson?

Doubt it......

brimfull · 09/03/2007 23:50

I am amazed you got him to lie still long enough to get it out,was the smell getting to him aswell?

mrsjohnsim · 09/03/2007 23:51

and yuk to the pom pom...but what a relief it has come out..
you will be able to tell him when he is about 1 and is worried about his cred

and, didn't i tell you, i have just married the lovely mr sim...

mrsjohnsim · 09/03/2007 23:51

actually, i suppose i should tell him too

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/03/2007 23:52

we had to erm, hold him a bit....

But, i can see why he wouldnt want to eat. You know that dead animal smell? If you had that up your nose 24/7, you'd lose your appetite, wouldnt you really? I doubt he could taste, and, I suspect he felt sick from swallowign that nasty stuff that was up there. I'm wondering if some sick had got stuck behind it too....bleugh!

Oh - eek! Poor ds.

Like the name MJS! Did you see these?

ComeOVeneer · 10/03/2007 00:05

Oh how horrid for him. glad its out and he will be on the mend. On a lighter not dh's sister stuck a pea up her nose as a small child so she was taken to A&E they sat for hours until they were seen and the nurse looked her nose but couldn't see anything. So SIL was asked was she sure it was a pea and she had put it up her nose. To which she replied yes I'm sure, look here it is, and open up hand to reveal the pea which had come out a couple of hours earlier unbeknown to anyone else

Aero · 10/03/2007 00:06

My youngest did this with a little foam cover of headphones it had to be removed at A&E and he needed a course of antibiotics to clear the infection that had built up behind the obstuction. I must say I have never smelt anything so bad it was over a week befor we realised what was causing the problem and if the poor wee sole got to close it made you gag he had even been to the gp who could find no cause for such a bad smell.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/03/2007 10:22

awww, poor thing. At least we arent the only ones........
