What's it like? Where's nice to live? and all that stuff. I'm sure there's been a thread before but I couldn't find it.

TIA

I was brought up in Nottingham - and think it has improved since then - much more stylish than it used to be! It has lovely parks (University, Woolaton, Arboretum, Castle etc) a great theatre and arts centre, good shopping, and good access to lovely countryside too.
To live; Wilford? West Bridgford? One of the villages/towns within a ten-mile radisus? What sort of area are you looking for? What's important to you?

Thanks, have now found thread!

DH is flirting with the Uni so ideally we'd like to be close to the main campus (biking distance) and spend no more than £250k (is that possible?) for a 3 bed place. Not bothered about schools.

I have no idea about what's where IYSWIM,so the houses that appear on Rightmove could be somewhere hellish!

Should add that DH is desperate to move but as we live in an area with low house prices the thought of paying £350k for a boring semi (such as we have now!) sticks in the craw. House prices have scuppered lots of potential moves so it would be nice if Nottingham were affordable!

Hi, I also grew up in Nottingham and I agree it's changed loads. There are some really nice places like Gamston and parts of West Bridford but it can be quite pricey. Can't remember much though around the university area. I live down South and would move back in a flash if I could...

vict17 · 04/07/2004 20:46

Oh yes, avoid The Meadows!!!

There are excellent schools in Nottinghamshire, but take care to check out the school catchment areas. Some of the inner city schools are quite rough and have very low academic attainment levels.

hewlettsdaughter · 04/07/2004 20:50

Woollaton nice but pricey. Lady Bay area might be worth a look.

oneofeach · 04/07/2004 21:25

I grew up in Lady Bay and I think its a great place to live as a kid - open fields and countryside just down the road but really accessible for town too. I wish there were places like that where I live now!! I didn't think the house prices were that bad compared with Newcastle, tbh... And I think my dad cycles to the university sometimes and he's in his 70s now!

Nottingham town centre also seems to have a lot going for it - seems very affluent now compared with when I left (mid 1980s).
Its certainly on my (very short) list of places I'd contemplate moving to...

Hi ya, I've lived in Notts all my life and love it. My mum and dad moved up here from down south just before I was born . Like anywhere though there are rough areas to avoid but there are also very nice areas. I live in Redhill and work in Beeston v.v close to uni. It takes me ½ hour tops to get there down the ring road in the rush hour. I don't know if you can get hold of the Nott'm Evening post somehow. But Thursday's edition has homes to buy in it. Worth a look if you can get hold of one!!!

Thanks guys. WB sounds like where we are now, loads of 1930s semis! will give him the go-ahead for vigorous eyelash batting with the Uni.
