An old school friend is getting married soon and I don't know what to get them. They've been together years, have all the householdy stuff they need. I haven't been in really close contact with them in recent years, just emails and odd phone calls, cards and notes at Christmas and birthdays. So I don't really know them.
They haven't got a wedding list. What shall I get them? HELP!!!!

vouchers for an evening out?

DrDaddy · 08/03/2007 20:34

Depends how much you want to spend. Do they drink? How about membership of the Wine Society ?

Great ideas all of those. Not familiar with where they live though so not sure about the vouchers for night out (but will file away idea for local friends!).
Thanks!

Any more?

When you say they've got all the householdy stuff they need...so, have I, but I covet some nice householdy stuff instead of the there's-nothing-wrong-with-it-but-I've-had-it-for-10-years stuff that fills my flat. So, instead of inexpensive wineglasses, I'd like some nice ones. I'd love a beautiful carved fruit bowl, or one of those big gorgeous Italian ceramic salad bowls. Or a really interesting/nice flower vase instead of a perfectly functional el cheapo. Or some really beautiful candlesticks.

What about a leather bound photo album? Some packets of exotic/interesting seeds and one of those big old fashioned silver watering cans? Not sure what they're made of.

Is there anything you'd like that is beautiful, but not strictly functional? Think along those lines, I'd say...

Id agree with early bird.. we had some lovely unusual bowls, fruit and ornamental for our wedding present.

Depending on how much you want to spend, or whether you want to go in with other people, but we bought a good friend a picture. We did group together and got a fw brochucres and then asked bride and groom and they picked ont .

There are cases of wines etc you can get from Laithwaites or similar.

Albums and nice photo frames are a good idea, traditional but will be used.

Will continue to think

tree for garden?
oxfam donkey?

case of wine (with notes if they'd appreciate it) often goes down well

The nicest wedding present we got was from someone who collected the invitation, order of service, place cards from the top table and a bit of our confetti and then had it all framed for us. (There are usually loads of people running small spare room type businesses around picture framing, so it doesn't have to cost a fortune) It's now 10 years ago and still hangs in the house and everyone who comes in comments on it.

If you think they might be wanting children, what about a gooseberry bush for the garden?

Caligula · 08/03/2007 21:22

One of those things you put in the bath to make it into a jacuzzi? I thought this was a lovely decadent present, but a prospective groom I suggested it to, said if he wanted that, he'd sit in the bath and fart.

So perhaps not.

Olive tree for the garden (or other tree)?

Fabulous coffee table book about something interesting (can't think what)?

Some more great ideas, thanks a lot.

Lol at farting in the bath instead of a jacuzzi

We were given an antique cookie jar with a note wishing our marriage to be like the jar - long lasting and full of sweet things.
Cute!
