Do YOU play a musical instrument and out of those who do, who learnt to play as an adult?

Have always fancied learning to play the piano, clarinet or flute. Am getting on a bit now so wondering if it's too late. Unable to read music too - so guess there's no hope at all now really. lol

I play the violin. It's never too late to learn. Infact, I feel it's sometimes better learning later on - it's YOU that wants to learn rather than your parents wanting you to, IYKWIM...

myturn · 07/03/2007 22:51

Oh, I learned as a child BTW, hated all the practicing though...

MrsPhilipGlenister · 07/03/2007 22:53

I learnt as a child and can't play a note now, can't evern remember how to read music! Much better to learn as an adult!

Never too late. If I had to start from scratch with learning to read music, I'd be tempted to start with a recorder too cos you don't have to think too much about getting a decent sound out of it and can concentrate on counting and remembering what notes are which. Very similar fingering to a clarinet or flute, so you can have a go of making a sound on those whilst making progress with the music on a recorder. Someone else might advise against it - I'm no expert...

I remember how to play the simple tunes on the recorder. DDs have one each and I had a go the other day. You know, go and tell aunt nancy and London's burning etc etc. I used to be quite musical as a kid. Played a fife and side drum in a band but that wasn't by reading music it was more by ear. I also own a guitar and had one lesson at college. Never got very far with it.

No, never too late to learn.

I am a bassoonist

I'd love to have piano lessons again (I do play now, or did until I sold my piano ) or maybe learn the guitar. I taught myself to play the flute in my late teens.

PeachesMcLean · 07/03/2007 23:00

I'd love to learn piano but need a bigger house first...

So you're not a complete beginner Sparkler. Can you get hold of a clarinet or flute?

Marscentio · 07/03/2007 23:00

I do.

I learnt as a child and still play now.

Sparkler1, many people start learning musical instruments as adults and learning the notes is not difficult. Try not to get caught into the popuar metnods with the words attached to the notes but just take notes with their names as ABCDEFG. Only 7 notes! Honestly, it wouldn't take you long to start playing your favourite tunes and enjoying a nice hobby. Good luck!

never too late to learn - i'm a bassist (did you guess from the name!) - Learnt as an adult.

I think it is easier if you learn as a child but there is no reason not to learn as an adult!

Oh - and reading music is ridiculously easy once you are shown.

Good luck!

hi bassmama. way to go. is it hard? i love the bass and have always dreamed of learning.

sparkler1. i have been playing piano since i was 4. i love it and am not bad.

my husband began learning to play piano when he was 30, had no clue what a 'middle c' was till then. when i met him he was 33, and could play some really difficult pieces, beautifully, and off by heart. you should go for it, playing music, if you like it, ads another dimension to your life!

impostoryummymummy · 10/03/2007 01:12

forgot to add that when we moved to england we left the piano at my mil's. she began to learn and now she can play some nice mozart pieces. so at any age really....

HaggisSupper · 10/03/2007 01:24

I play percussion. I started when I was 12 but you're never too old. It is so relxing and rewarding when you play.

I used to take piano lesson but I sounded like LesDawson so I haven't played piano in a while

BassMama · 10/03/2007 01:36

hello imposteryummymummy,

Its not too hard, helps if you can already play a bit of guitar but you dont have to be able to.

It is probably one of the easier instruments to learn, getting good for solos and things is harder, and playing without a drummer is hard too!
