I think it's wrong to manufacture and sell early pregnancy tests

I'm talking about the ones that claim to detect a pregnancy from 4 days before your period is due.

it's so wrong.
because the majority of women who do them are probably not pregnant.
and yet they buy them anyway.
this month
and the month after that
and the month after that.

the companies that manufacture these tests are taking advantage of womens' desparation.

not much for me to say except, yup, quite!!!!!!

piglit · 07/03/2007 12:29

And even if the test is positive it's sooo early and quite likely that her period will come anyway. Rather than being a late period the tester has to deal with the knowledge that she was pg for a while.

And they pick up chemical pregnancies that you wouldn't have known about otherwise, causing much heartache.

But they shouldn't make lots of things which pander to inherent weaknesses. Cigarettes, mini-skirts etc

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/03/2007 12:32

minni-skirts?

Yes I thought I could wear one, I was weak, I caved. I blatantly cannot. It's best for all concerned if they don't make them so I don't do it again.

lucykate · 07/03/2007 12:37

when my mum had me, back in the days of dinosaurs , she said the doctor wouldn't accept you were pg until you had missed 3 consecutive periods, only then would they do a blood test to confirm

charliecat · 07/03/2007 12:40

I know where your coming from, my fiend tested early and was pregnant and went onto lose it. She maybe have never known otherwise.
Shes not the only one. Its sad

lulumama · 07/03/2007 12:45

the thing is, as soon as you miss a period, and you are TTC, then you are going to do a test....so the 4 days does not make a huge amount of difference.

If you get a BFP 4 days before you are due, then start bleeding, you are going to know you could be having a miscarriage....if you waited the 4 days and did the test the day you were due on, and got a BFP and then started bleeding, you are still going to feel the same.

IFYSWIM

the early tests give you either a false BFN or a BFP you would have got a few days later anyway.

the small print does say they are less than 50 % accurate i believe.

earlgrey · 07/03/2007 12:50

But surely they must be reassuring to people who don't want to be pregnant but are late, no?

Blu · 07/03/2007 12:54

mmmmm - dunno.
If you are really anxious to know, either way, 4 days is a long time to be really anxious, so why not?

I suspect they are of more healthy emotional use (and less commercially exploitative) given all the things people have said) to those who do NOT want to be preganant than the DTC (desparate to conceive).

If you don't ant to proceed with a pregnancy, 4 days is half a week, when weeks really count.

Littlefish · 07/03/2007 13:00

I was ttc for 2.5 years before finally getting pregnant with dd. Blu is right, those final 4 days of every month were hellish. I couldn't focus on anything else except the possibility that I was pregnant.

I used to do a test most months, knowing that I would almost certainly get a negative, but at least then I could get on with my life again.

Yes, the manufacturers made a lot of money out of me, but they also gave me peace of mind.

I also did 15, yes 15 pregnancy tests when I finally got pregnant, just to make sure

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/03/2007 13:13

but they're less than 50% accurate. And I think that far from giving peace of mind there is a risk of thinking "oh, maybe I tested too early, I'll do another one in two days time".

I just think it causes stress and heartache that otherwise is unnecessary.

Funnily enough, I never thought that. It gave me enough of a kick up the arse to stop wallowing for that month and get on with life again.
