I have too much time on my hands to sit around and a worry about things (just coming out of the PND vortex) and DH and I agree that I should take up a hobby, but I don't know what.
I went to hobbycraft today to see if I could be inspired but left feeling a bit overwhelmed by the choices.
I quite like the idea of card making and perhaps doing Mosaics.
Would really like some suggestions and perhaps you could tell me what you've liked doing and what you've disliked.
Thanks
Wellsie

P.S. I'm rubbish at sewing so no cross stitch or anything like that.

i enjoy card making ... you can di it and watch tv too. it does become a bit addictive though and you can spend lots of money. i don't sell mine just use them myself.

i'm not at all artistic, but you really don't need to be.

hobbycraft do lots of ideas sheets but as you say it can be a bit overwhelming.

I did scrapbooking for a while and found that quite good fun. It is basically just afancy way of doing photo albums. I can give you a bunch of links about it. Try this one or this one for starters to give you an idea of what it's all about. (the second link is to a UK site!!!, most of them are in the US)
It's great if you like taking photos and fiddling around with bits of paper and stuff. There are even groups around that get together for cropping seesions...
I hope you find something that suits you... Best of luck.

Thanks mummysurfer. Anyone else out there who's got any ideas?

Do you have a garden or balcony. Gardening can be really theraputic and creative. Mosaics is a good idea. Or how about learning a foreign language...you could treat yourself to a holiday in the country whose language you are learning a year after starting the classes.

Gosh, most of the things I do seem to be essential (sigh) - or kids-related! Something active might suit, swim, cycle, run, pilates (not tried this last tho keep planning to). I love baking, genuinely therapeutic and also definitely not essential cookery. Nigella's domestic goddess is fab. Or how about a book group? Or yes, learning a language or doing some other course. I did a WEA counselling skills course which led to me doing a certificate in counselling, really interesting.

I know that you say that you are rubbish at sewing so no cross stitch, but tapestry work is dead easy! It is half cross stitch and the canvases are often printed with the right colours, so you just stitch over them, nothing to count. Sort of like grown up colouring by numbers!

I do card making too (and if I'm honest it's fairly much the same reasons as you - I took it up during my m/c!). Try surfing www.madaboutcards.com (but only if you have a credit card ready - I got addicted immediately)

mummysurfer · 03/07/2004 11:08

oh, fisil, another addictive site. did you get my message btw?

wellsie,
tomorrow on QVC at 12 and 3/4 o'clock is Fun stamps, you could watch it and see if it appeals. i'm not sure how good it will be as i haven't seen it before. but maybe it could help. there's another craft person who has a programme on there - Dawn Bibby- she is good and demonstartes lots of different techniques. she also has a shop about 40 mins from here. i'll see if i can find out when she is on.

mummysurfer · 03/07/2004 11:14

if you can't get QVC you can watch it live on their website

fisil · 03/07/2004 22:40

yes mummysurfer - will be in the post soon.

have a great holiday.

I have been a bit of a cross stitcher in my time (before babies!) and I'm not really very good at sewing (i.e. I gave it yup as soon as I could at school and never finished the skirt I made in the second year) but actually it's much easier than it looks! OR have you thought about doing an evening class? We seem to be getting lots of prospectuses (is that the word?) through the door at the moment - maybe you could choose something completely different and just take a chance? Good Luck and have fun!

hatter · 04/07/2004 01:15

My cousin took up photography after having two girls - she did evening classes and took an o level and the result is some really gorgeous piccies of her family

A friend of mine does silk painting, mostly scarves - it doesn't have to be increadibly artistic, hers are quite blobby and swirly, it's the use of colour that makes them really beautiful
