Was behind a car today, where not only was the child not strapped in, but standing up on the front passenger seat!!!!! She must have only been about 5 or 6.

maybe she undid the seatbelt and they hadnt realised or were trying to find somewhere to stop

my dd did this and i had a horrendous 2 minutes trying to find somewhere to stop on a dual carriageway

Mine get awkward at times, and have refused to be strapped in. They have done that rigid back thing that they do.

I just sit in the car and wait. I am NEVER in so much of a hurry that I would not strap them in.

Although I did once strap child into car seat and forget to strap car seat to car but that's another story

I followed her onto the estate, where she could have pulled over and strapped her in.

She was standing on the passenger front seat!! And the mother was turning and chatting to her

DS at 2 sometimes is a nightmare and I have taken him indoors and sat him on the stairs before - DD at 6 knows that she has to be strapped in or we don;t move and now the threat of stamping on her DS works fine.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/03/2007 16:09

This sort of thing makes me mad. I wouldn't even drive down our lane to get the post without her in her seat.

wurlywurly · 05/03/2007 16:10

thats awful, there is no way I would allow my ds' to do that, they both get in the car and say "belts on"

Hulababy · 05/03/2007 16:11

No excuse for this. DD knows that seat belts do not come undone and I will stop immediately - on hard shoulder if necessary - or at side of a road with hazards on asap, and certainly within minutes, if really necessary - and ensure it was fastened. At this age she would also receive some form of sanction as well. It is that important to me.

A 5/6 year old should definitely know better by that age, and the mother certainly should.

SparklyGothKat · 05/03/2007 16:12

I forgot to strap DS in once, I drove for about 5 seconds before I heard 'mum, I;m not strapped in' They all have highbacked boosters and are strapped in, even Ds who is 9.

ds1 went through a horrible phase of shooting from the boot (scenic grande) into the front seat. He did it to dh on the motorway. DH nearly passed out. Thankfully (touch wood) that one seems to have gone quiet for the moment.

Kelly1978 · 05/03/2007 16:25

my kids would be screaming their heads off if I pulled off without them getting strapped in. dd and ds1 do their own, but all hell breaks lose if they can't get it in - they've heard the consequences of not being strapped in. I do feel sorry for kids that are allowed to bounce around the car. I see it a LOT in slough.

Mine are the same they crack up if I haven't given them time to get there belts on. When they were younger, they knew the car didn't move if not strapped in. Of course I had a couple of scares when they undid it or pulled an arm out. I found screaching to a halt (at first safe opportunity) did the trick.

I gave DD a scare when she was faffing about sorting out her dolls before getting her belt on, I braked just enough for her to get jolted forward and get a fright ( was still in the drive).

I used to be amazed at the ministers wife (and the minister) picking up their LO from nursery and letting them sit in the front seat without a seat or belt, perhaps they relied on the power of God to keep her safe .

I was itching to take a photo with my phone today of a car that was driving with a baby, sat on his mums lap, clambering over her and attempting to get on the parcel shelf.

I didnt, because I would have been using a mobile phone whilst driving and I figured that would go down equally as well

If you are seriously asking how difficult it is - may I refer you to my DS who has perfected the art of going stiff as a board, then limp as a corpse intermittently to try and prevent me from strapping him in. It's farking good exercise though, AND, one of the reasons I need extra space to open my car doors at the supermarket

Rhubarb · 05/03/2007 21:40

dd does her own belt now, eventually. She takes her time too and I don't move until she's strapped in but dh just drives off. Men!

Hate faffing about with bloody car seats though - can never figure out where the bloody belt is meant to go!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/03/2007 21:53

what accent? you have received my mail then?

themanfromiPannema · 05/03/2007 22:11

yes. southern one. X

lionheart · 06/03/2007 08:55

It is shocking. I think it might be beacause those of us of a certain age remember the campaign to get everyone to use seat belts and the rather graphic adds that went with it .... others are oblivious.

(I thought you were making a joke, there, SGK and that you would be talking about rockets).
