Some VERY dull Ikea (Croydon) questions

Wheelybug · 05/03/2007 08:39

I haven't been to Ikea for SEVEN years (since the weekend dh spent the weekend putting the furniture together only for me to turn round and say I don't like it.... He has refused to go ever since)
but have spotted a duvet cover I want to get for dd so... am off there a bit later (to Croydon should this make a difference).

So, I am obvioulsy not taking dh but am taking dd aged 2. Do they do trolleys you can put toddlers in so I don't have to wrestle her into the buggy ? Hmmm actually just had a thought that you have to go up escalators to get in don't you so probably neither of these are going to work...

If you want to buy big stuff and have it delivered do you still have to pick it from the warehouse and then get it delivered ?

Anything else I should know ??

they have trolleys, but yes, you still have to pick it. There are lifts for the trolleys so that isn;t a problem. Can't you leave dd with dh? You might struggle with heavy stuff and a toddler. Oh, and they charge a fortune for delivery.

tribpot · 05/03/2007 08:43

I'm basing my answer on Ikea in Leeds but ..

  • they do do trolleys you can put a toddler in. - there should be lift access for disabled people so escalators not an issue
  • yes you still have to pick up big stuff in the warehouse, but you're only going for a duvet cover, yes? (I know only too well the Ikea phenomenon where you go in for an egg cup and come out with a brand new three piece suite).

however

Ikea bedding isn't UK sized, it's European sized. So unless you are buying a duvet as well, I don't think it will fit?

Wheelybug · 05/03/2007 08:44

thanks Kelly - I'm really only going to get a duvet cover (and no doubt lots of other bits which all seem really cheap but when I get to the checkout all mount up to shedloads) but we also want a sofa bed but that will have to wait until DH can come in that case !

If they charge a fortune for delivery I'll just have to persuade dh to go without either of us so he can get it in the car. Now that would be amusing. I shall suggest it to him tonight... .

thanks tribpot. Had considered the duvet cover size thing and will get dd a duvet there too (helps they are v. cheap !).

Mind you seeing that this is all so we can put her into a proper single bed and last nigth she fell out of her toddler bed gaining a egg sized bruise on her forehead maybe we should think again...

I think ikea is quite good with a toddler, you can go get soem cheap food, and it is very toddler friendly and there is the little park outside. Mine used to quite like going there.

TheBlonde · 05/03/2007 09:18

Hi Wheelybug
I wouldn't attempt to get a sofa bed solo there but the other stuff you should be fine

I've never used a kiddie trolley there but assume they must have them. We must have just used reins last time.

We did the first night in a big bed for DS last night and it was surprisingly okay
Have you got a bedguard?

Ikea bedding fits standard UK duvets, beds etc.

Cod, I live in the living section, I sleep in the bed section. I'd suggest you don't go in the bathroom roomsets though

Twiglett · 05/03/2007 09:28

Ikea croydon, and I don't know how I know this because I believe Ikea is one of Dante's circles of hell, is open till midnight

does Ikea bedding fit king-size?

Wheelybug · 05/03/2007 09:33

Thanks everyone.

Twig. I think you might be my dh. Thats exactly what he calls it.

Right so no sofabed today. Just bedding I promise !

Hi Theblonde - well done to your ds (not long now till ds2/dd ?!). DD has been in her bed for about 6 weeks and we've had no problems without a bedguard but last night was horrible.

Ikea bedding does fit UK sizes but their pillowcases are smaller than ours so buy her a pillow too!

They have normal supermarket trolleys that your DD could sit in (at least here in Hungary!) and also little trolleys that your DD could push around. My DS likes to do this (we usually end up leaving that one somewhere in the store).

KTeePee · 05/03/2007 09:51

Don't know about Croydon but other branches have buggy type things for toddlers - you put in a pound like you would for a supermarket trolley. You can then swop over to a proper trolley when you get to The Marketplace (which is where they are stored in our nearest one)

ChippyMinton · 05/03/2007 09:52

i might be imagining this, but you may need a £1 coin for the kiddie trolley (and they are usually inside the entrance).

ChippyMinton · 05/03/2007 09:52

x-post KTP i don't usually take my DC.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2007 10:03

Um... Ikea pillowcases fit my UK pillows too. DSs have them on their beds.

There are trolleys in Croydon just through the restaurant upstairs so you can get one and then double back if you really want to wander round the store but this bit is right by Children's Ikea which is where the children's bedding is. I'm sure trolleys are downstairs too. And there's a lift, obviously, so the escalators aren't a problem! You don't need a kiddy trolley, you can carry your child the short distance up to the trolleys, trust me!

Personally I think you should get there for 9:30am when the restaurant opens, get a prime parking spot, have a cheap breakfast or free coffee go shopping when the store opens at 10 and you'll be out before 10:30.

Enid, I have a Ikea king sized duvet and a UK cover. I have a feeling they've changed the bed sizes. Our spare double bed is an Ikea one and UK bedding fits it.

Budababe · 05/03/2007 12:37

Think they must have changed sizes Soupy - I bought an Ikea duvet cover and pillow case years ago in London and the pillow cases didn't fit - as DH was also of the view that Ikea was up with Dante's circle of hell we never went back!

Have bought their bedding here in Hungary though and the pillowcases are def smaller!

Wheelybug · 05/03/2007 14:58

Thanks everyone. I have returned complete with purchases !

As it was dd was fast asleep when we got there so bunged her in the buggy and it was fine. TBH though should have put her in a trolley as I bought quite a few bits.

Just in case anyone is interested (unlikely but I'm going to tell you anyway) I bought:

duvet cover
duvet
2 x photo frames (1 as a pressie 1 to frame something we've been meaning to frame for yonks)
1 cafetiere (broke ours at the w/e)
1 set of cheapo vegetable knives (always losing small ones)
2 x veg peelers (ditto about losing)
a smelly candle (pressie)
2 baskets
1 lampshade
and 1 hobby horse !

Spent about £66 so not too bad really.

Need to go back though I think .

and Twig it bore less resemblance to dante's circle of hell on a monday than it did 7 years ago on a saturday. Will definitely do the 9.30 thing though in future I think - sounds like a plan.

66 quid very restrained
no food hall purchases then?

I need to send DH there for a rug but can't face it myself. He takes hours and then wants to have lunch, coffee etc

peegeeweegee · 05/03/2007 17:49

Sounds like a great day out! I love Ikea, and much to poor dh's distress I make it a day long affair with lunch in the restaurant, a thorough browse through the whole store, and icecream for the dc after we have paid for our purchases.

Love love love the place - especially at 10am on a weekday!
(would never attempt to go there at the weekend though, way to busy...)
