Kids and Computers - when could yours do cbeebies website by themselves?

Just curious to see what others have experienced.
My 3yrs 6 mths old dd1 loves cbeebies website. She can't do it all for herself. She can do a lot of the stories and some of the games now ... once she's been thru them with me enough times. It's probably been the last 6 months or so she's been starting to able to do it. SHe can click Point and drag (sometimes), but she has real trouble with things like the fimbles footy game where you have to use the mouse to control the players position, and if it's keys for controlling position she has no chance. There are also obvious restrictions due to not being able to read.... she finds that very frustrating. Apart from the reading issue, when can expect some peace and quiet when she's on the PC?

4yo?

My dd is 3.5 and can colour in pictures and uses the mouse pretty well. I don't think she's been on Cbeebies as i found this page 'just' for colouring and when she does it she likes that one I got a shock a few weeks ago, i was looking for an old song,(some clever mumsnetter found it for me), and PORN suddenly flashed on the screen so i never leave her alone on it for more than a sec as i'm terrified she'll somehow access Porn

Paranoid....me??????????

maisystar · 01/07/2004 00:08

my ds is 1 mnth older than your dd and is better than me on the pc!!

he turns the computer on, logs on to internet, into favourites and then into cbeebies, all on his own!

i find it bloody amazing and more than a bit scarey!

if you have speakers as she goes down the cbeebies menu, songtime etc it says the options which could maybe help.

hth

From 2.5 dd was using the pc, taught her where the back button was and so if she cant do the game shes chosen she goes to the back button to the games menu. Started her early with reader rabbit for baby which she still loves now 3.5. Maybe get a game like reader rabbit baby/toddler that are designed for her age and all they need to do is put the cursor over the object, no clicking required till shes got used to it. C.A.>t if you would like to borrow reader rabbit btw.

xoz · 01/07/2004 00:11

Yes I'm pretty terrified of the porn thing too. I've got the sites I like for her to use alll bookmarked and never search for new ones when shes around... she doesn't know how to change between them yet. Plan to keep it that way for as long as possible

charliecat - is this reader rabbit game available on amazon? never heard of it before. dd loves the computer (she's only allowed about 3 times a week). she's 2 1/2 now and i've been showing her things on the internet or photos from the digital camera on it , also amde some files with cartoonish pictures or interesting photos and little stories just for her and we look at them togethjer, since she was very young. she can't manage much on her own still, and am interested too in good programes/websites for her age. as for the cbeebies website all she can do on her own is press the space bar for Brum to beep the horn. She thinks it's hilarious!

charliecat · 01/07/2004 00:34

Oh i dont know about amazon. It s reader rabbit, and by The Learning company. contact me vai MN and i will pass it on to you if you like, save some pennys. It really is great.

charliecat · 01/07/2004 01:08

No problem!

ds1 was about 2 and half. But Cbeebies is boring now and he frequents ebay. I have to keep all credit cards out of his reach. He's five. Only last week his eyes lit up when he saw my credit card on the side. Dh got there first and ds1 scowled and said "I don't need the card. Just the long number across the middle and the expirey date!" Don't they grow up so quick these days?

charliecat · 15/07/2004 01:43

Branster did you ever get the disks?

suzywong · 15/07/2004 01:49

It is scary isn't it how quickly they pick it up isn't it?

DS1, 3yrs 2 months proved to me he could do the Come Outside aeroplane game on Cbeebies using the track pad cursor navigator on the laptop.

Even DS2, 10 months can do simplne press any key games (he just hammers the keyboard with both fists). In fact whenever he sees the laptop he races over and starts banging away. This is limiting my MN time though.

Branster · 15/07/2004 01:50

Yes, yes, yes, charliecat! Thank you very very much! I did e-mail you actually the day I got it as I wanted to return your postage and a couple of blank CDs at least as a thank you for kindness. I assume you didn't get the e-mail then...Let me know what could I send you in return please. many thanks!

maisystar · 15/07/2004 01:51

me and ds had a mn v cbeebies arguement this afternoon

needless to say i won, what with me having control of the chocolate

suzywong · 15/07/2004 01:53

What will we do the day they can buy their own chocolate ?

charliecat · 15/07/2004 01:54

Unless i was having a dizzy day im quite sure I didnt get the email! Does she like them then? I dont want anything in return have zillions of disks so pleased to get a couple out the house! Thank You though!

Branster · 15/07/2004 01:58

now i wonder who did i send it to??? i know i typed it and would think i also sent it. who to???!!! never mind. i was really excited though. dd is delighted with it (only did the baby one so far) and she's picking it up really quickly. it's really good. thank you very very much. you are very kind.

Judd · 15/07/2004 01:58

DD is 2.5 and she loves the C Beebies games. Favourite at the moment is Pingu Keepy Uppy ! She also likes the Bits and Bobs one. We turn the mouse speed right down for her so that she has chance to click on things without whizzing all over the place. Mind you, sometimes I have a look and she's clicking away like a mad thing - there's Tubby Toast backdrops, boxes asking her to download Shockwave etc. etc.....

charliecat · 15/07/2004 02:02

Glad she likes it! You,ll wish you didnt bother when shes keeping you from the pc to play stupid games when youve got much more important things to do like checking MN!

carla · 15/07/2004 02:08

Children as young as two can use a mouse .... what a load of bollocks. Haven't read all of this thread, but don't believe they can at that age. dd2 is 41/2, and only just mastering it.

carla · 15/07/2004 02:21

OK .... mine's a dunce

lydialemon · 15/07/2004 02:42

Carla, I think it depends how much they get to see it being done IYSWIM. DS1 was a lot later learning mouse and joypad than DS2 was, but DS2 learnt by watching DS1 and DS1 only got on the PC when I had the patience to sit through Thomas TTE again . So DS1 was a better teacher than me.........!

DSs never had a chance to go on CBeebies until we got broadband last october, when DS2 was 3yrs 4mths. He was fine on it, but I had to put it on for him and occasionally close a million windows to refind the home page.
