Who has cracks in their plaster?????

Looking for reassurance really....we have quite a few cracks in the plaster all over our house - walls & ceilings! - they are not big, more of the hairline variety...but I lie in bed worrying about them and often worry that the whole house might be moving...so is it fairly normal (the cracks, not my state of mind)? Please come on and tell me about the cracks that your houses have in them!!!!

You quite often get fine hair-line cracks where the plasterboard joins are underneath the plaster.

Do you know when it was plastered?

Ellaroo · 01/03/2007 20:02

Well, no idea when the walls were plastered, but some of the ceilings were only plastered about a year & a half ago...

Its normal for cracks to appear for years nad years after houses are built as timber etc settles.

We have a fair few. We have a new house - 18 months old or so, and they are drying out cracks. Buikders are supposed to be coming out to sort them soon.

One very bored (and drunken) night we followed a crack in my spare room ceiling across the entire house! It went 'through' walls by appearing at almost the exact space the other side...so either my house is about to split open down the middle or it is totally normal...and this was about 4 years ago...

Our house is 110 years old and has plenty of cracks. (Previously the house had 3-5 layers of wall paper so I didn't notice them before we bought.) Was worried so had someone to look at them. Basically the ones in the ceiling are because the plaster and lath is at the end of it's life and needs replacing - so is worth worrying about - but the walls are a result of settlement that's happened in the past - and therefore aren't a problem.
Last place was brand new and immaculate so expected the same here.

All houses move over the years. The cracks that you need to worry about are wider at one end than the other & wide enough to get a key into.

You may be able to tell from this, that we live in a house with a lot of cracked plaster. The surveyor said that it was caused by the timber frames drying out & moving & is entirely normal.

Chirpygirl - that's the kind of 'game' I'd play when sober...(the drunken version is where I would start trying to persuade dh to put in diy RSJ's to stop any further movement!)

Thank you for your reassurance - I can't fit a key in any of the cracks, so sounds like it might be fine - just worrying as they seem to be coming so quickly - they weren't there a couple of months ago! However, have had a lot of banging around done so maybe it's just settling after that.
