Has your DH/DP had the snip? If so, what was it like?

DH and I have been discussing the snip. Well to be fair, I have been discussing it, he has been listening to me.

I am 28 weeks gone with DC3 so we are fairly certain that we don't want anymore children. Unfortunately I don't mix well with oral contraceptives and after 15 years together I'd love to be free of condoms.

DH's limited worries are:

  1. the pain
  2. loss of function/sensitivity
  3. the pain
  4. the pain
  5. how gory it will be (he's not great with blood).

TIA

there's been a few posts about this under health - try searching the archives

it was very ungory - two tiny little cuts on each side with a stitch in each. There was a small amount of blood and dh got a kind of jockstrap to wear for the first day. He drove himself home from the hospital (30 min drive) without any problem.
He did make a big song and dance about it at first but wasn't in much pain, it was more the fact that he'd had stitches in his knackers etc. I think it was just a bit sore and achey for a few days, nothing terrible and he went back to work the next day.
There's been absolutely no loss of function or sensitivity - tell your dh to be sensible about this - when you have a look online to see what is actually done, it's perfectly evident that the procedure will make zero difference to function and sensitivity.

It's very liberating not having to worry about unwanted pregnancies anymore.

my dp had the snip a couple of weeks ago now...

tbh, he looked quite uncomfortable and that lasted about a week, although i think the fact he had to wear y-fronts was his biggest complaint! regular pain killers and loose fitting trousers/joggers helped!

as for loss of function/sensitivity dp does'nt appeared to have suffered this problem ... the surgeon can advise you on the risks when you see him!

as for how gory it is, the incision was very small so i doubt their was a whole lot of blood, plus dp had no intention of looking at what he was doing and kept an eye on the ceiling at all times!!

his balls did go a fantastic range of colours though!

as dp says, if it works, if we never have to use any form of contraception again it was totally worth it...

and the way i see it, i've had 2 children, 1 delivered by c-section... all the pain i've been through, it was the least he could do for me

My DH had the snip 2 weeks ago yesterday and was rushed to hospital within half an hour of getting home from the operation. He had a blood clot and his nuts swelled to the size of a melon 9 I kid you not)
He is still struggling to walk and will be off work for a month possibly 6 weeks.
he was in absolute agony when I called the ambulance and stayed that way for a week and a haly.
We were told it was a minor operation, which I am sure it is but were not told that occaisionally there are serious complications.
I really regret him having it done and hand on heart wouldnt want to see anyone else go through it.

Thanks for the responses.

Good to get a practical view of both good and bad experiences.

Bigknickers - that sounds horrific (did you find out how often this happens?)

Anybody else?

Sounds awful Bigknickers

Absolutely fine for DH, no problems at all.

My DH had this done 20 odd years ago when our 3rd dc was 18 months old.

On the plus side

It was a day appointment which meant he came home at tea-time.
I got to take his stitches out. GP said I could do it or DH could ask the practise nurse. I begged him to let me do it. As I saw it it was payback time for 3 lots of morning sickness, 3 enemas, 3 fanjo shaves and 3 lots of labour.

He got off lightly in my opinion

Negatives
He was very sore, he actually looked like John Wayne missing his horse
His bits where black and blue for weeks, a fact which tickled our Pakistani GP no end. Snap he said when DH showed him the bruising.

My DH has it done last June and it was much the same as Geekgrrl and Saralou. I'd had to c-sections - 1 emergency and 1 elective.
He was in a bit of pain (and he actually said more discomfort than actual pain) for a few days. Where we live, they always do the procedure on a Friday so that you then have the weekend to rest and you are almost back to normal by Monday so it only means a day off work.
Before he had it done, they explained the possible complications - extremely rare but still possible. It must have been awful for Bigknickers and her DH but in all reality that could happen from a minor procedure at the dentist too - any procedure at all has the potential for risk but in the scheme of things, the positives for us massively outweighed the very unlikely risks - the worst bit was the wearing of y-fronts and the waiting 3 months to get the all clear that it had worked. He's had absolutely no loss of function/sensitivity - in fact, bearing in mind we were forced to used condoms until that point, it is SO much better now!!! We can actually be spontaneous again! In our opinion, def worth doing.

Dr said 1 in 10 get some sort of blood clot, 1 in 100 get a more serious clot but the dr that did the op said 1 in 400 get a serious blood clot. just been back to Drs now because the stitches have come out and one of the wounds is gaping open. I am now worried that things will never be right although the dr says it will be right but will take time.
Just wish I could turn back the clock because there is no way I would let DH go through this again.

BigGitDad · 28/02/2007 12:05

Mine was fine I was sore for about a month. No real pain even straight after the operation due to the painkillers. The guy before me made me laugh when he came out of the surgery, he was walking like John Wayne with his legs three feet apart!
I also heard a story from a friend who worked in Middlesborough who said he knew a guy who turned up to the hospital on a bicycle! Needless to say the hospital ordered him a cab for the journey home.

aznerak · 28/02/2007 12:12

How awful for you both. My DH got given printed information about the procedure, recovery, risks etc and I can't remember exactly what it said about the chance of complications, but it certainly wasn't that high. He was told that on average, a minor clot could form in up to 2% of cases, but it often depends on the experience of the doctor performing the procedure apparently.
It is a tricky decision to make - especially hearing such a terrible ordeal suffered by bigknickers but then, if you are on the pill, you too can suffer horrible complications. My friend got a very severe DVT from being on the pill.
