Does anyone have an answer for cradle cap?

We've tried shampoos, olive oil, not washing, only wetting, and DS2's head is still all scaley and horrible.

Can I try anything else? What actually causes it? Is there anything to stop it?

Thanks

I have to admit, i've picked it all off my DS.

Before anyone yells, i've not dug my nails in and picked it all off in one go and hurt him, i've just sat with him asleep and lightly run my nails over his head everyday in the sleep after his bath - it gradually (and i mean over 5 months) loosened the scales and they've lifted of their own accord.

My HV said a soft bristle baby brush would have had the same effect.

Hi Natalie Jane how are you? And congratulations! Haven't had time to post since dd2 was born! Anyway she had awful cradle cap and I found cradle cap oil and special wooden comb from Green baby worked brilliantly. Put oil on, wait at least half an hour and then gently comb it out. Seems the trick with any oil is to leave it on long enough!

hi my ds had bad cradle cap but boots own cradle cap cream worked. Give it a couple of days and it really works, doesnt smell either and was cheap, good luck.

Hey Mamado, congratulations I will search for the details tomorrow, when I can focus, we have hit the 12 weeks growth spurt big stlye, I am shattered!

I have put a load of baby oil on his head, brushed it with his soft brush the wrong way, and put a cotton hat on, hopefully by morning when I wash it the scales should just drop off.... or I might have to fish out the hair clippers

dd's has finally gone (age 6) and only because she had nits so for the last couple of weeks, I've had to comb her hair with a nit comb and copious amounts of either Hedrin or conditioner!

My 6 month old ds still has bits of CCap and its turned orangey? Tried Medical shampoo and olive oil but his hair has grown over it now so it doesnt bother me as much but on some of his photos his blonde hair looks a strange colour lol. (I'll admit to bit of picking too )

losty · 26/02/2007 22:49

DS2 is 2 and half and still has it. Doestnt bnother me. Atlhough I wish he woucl let me pick it . I assume it will go eventuially....

We kept having issues with ds and cradle cap right up until 2 mths ago and he's 2.5!! In the end we got the detinox out and vigouroisly washed his hair every night for 2 weeks and only then did it go and we haven't seen it since. I combed his hair through whilst damp to try and get rid of some of the scales. Seeing as how he hates having his hair washed and brushed you can imagine how well that went!!!!

pollyanna · 26/02/2007 22:59

I think I got rid of it by putting vaseline on it at night and then using a nit comb the next morning - it came off really easily - no scraping or anything.

My ds (8) still has his under his hair - I never bothered getting rid of his

NatalieJane · 27/02/2007 07:42

Well I did the baby oil, and hat, I did give it another quick brush the wrong way last night and loads of the scales came off, when I do his hair in a minute I am hoping the rest will wash away, fingers crossed it won't come back!

Thanks everyone, and thank f* I didn't have to shave his head, really didn't like the idea of that!!! Maybe I shouldn't speak too soon though eh?!!!

Sorry havnt read all the thread .But there is a product called dentenox (sp) or something sounding similar but have you rinsed the head with clean water not bath water after you have shampooed their hair as this often helps lots .

kimi · 27/02/2007 20:51

warm olive oil.

kittypants · 27/02/2007 20:55

agree warm olive oil.also works on ezcema and great as hand cream and for baby massage!

NatalieJane · 28/02/2007 09:34

I always wash his hair first then put him in the bath so it is two different lots of water.

I have been slavering on baby oil every time I change his nappy, then brushing it the wrong way morning and night, washing it all off in the morning and I have just gotten rid of the last few scales this morning so as long as it stays gone, he is back to normal. Thanks everyone

Any ideas on how to keep it away would be great! I would think that to keep putting oil on it every day would end up causing problems.

My ds (14 mths) gets it quite bad, and combing his hair whilst shampooed and wet seems to get rid of it. I try and remember to do this at least once a week as this definitely keeps it at bay too.

He has lots of hair so i often forget if i dont see any flakes to remind me though.
