Don't know if it's useful at all, but dh gave my two (7 and 6) ipods at Christmas - I was doubtful, but it has been completely fine. Nothing broken, nothing lost, good care taken (and that's saying something, as ds would lose his own feet if he could), no heavy tantrums about when it can be used & when it has to be put away. Dh has programmed dd's with endless ballet & fairy stories, & ds's with Bob Dylan and Greek myths. Both of them have lots of Beatles ... they don't quite realise they are being themselves programmed with what we think they ought to like

Much better than the old cassette players they had as you don't need to keep changing the tape.

So, you know, maybe it's not something to worry too much about?

Oh - and on the point about mugging - ours are not allowed to take ipods out of the house (except for if going on long car journey etc., when they're a godsend anyway)

Errr, can I be a complete partypooper and link to a thread I posted on some while ago where people were discussing children and headphones ?

Sorry to spoil the fun, but once you've looked at a few hundred audiograms, you too will develop a nervous twitch every time you see a small child with headphones. And the 'In the ear' type are even worse.

I wouldn't trust my 9 year old dsd with an expensive piece of equipment. Much too likely to lose it...

Bink · 26/02/2007 16:20

um. That's pause for thought, frogs.
I wasn't comfortable with "in the ear" phones (not for any informed reason, just sort of instinctive) so the children don't have those - just the conventional sort. And we did also programme in a volume-limiter. But I guess we need to check that it really is low enough, and do some proper research.

Thanks for the heads-up.

yes

I think 8 is too young. I also think if he's having a tantrum about it, I'd be even more inclined to stick to my guns about it, whatever dh says!
