ds2 is nearly 19 weeks old and if any of you have read my other thread (help he won't stop crying) i have been having a lot of trouble with him sleeping (or not as the case may be!!) He has been awake since 1am today. He has started to roll over onto his tummy but can't roll back yet. I have just gone into the bedroom to find he has finally settled....but laying on his tummy. Should I turn him back over or leave him?? I keep going in to check on him as I am scared he will do himself some damage. My other two didnt sleep on tummy til they could roll back so it didnt matter by then.

my 3 all slept on their tummies from very early on - they slept much better than on their backs. I would think if he is rolling over then he has enough head control to be ok on his tummy.

I think cot death is associated with a lot of things, one of which is sleeping on tummy, but if you aren't high for any other risks then this alone is probably not too bad.

i think once they are putting themselves on their tummies you leave them...they are mobile enough to change position should something obstruct their breathing surely...i don't know what the official view is on this, but it's what i think fwiw

I have a tummy sleeper, she has always loved being on her tummy, once they can get there themselves, then you can relax a bit about them being on it, thats what I was told!

busybee123 · 21/06/2004 13:56

i have left him for now. he is sleeping soundly. i keep going into check on him.

I found my two slept better on their tummies because they could burp and parp more easily in their sleep than they could if they were on their backs. As long as you are low for the other risks and your ds sleeps in a relatively cool room then he shoudl be fine - IMO.

curlysue · 21/06/2004 15:26

I must admit that I put my two to sleep on their tummies from an early age because they slept so much better that way and I was desperate for sleep! they both survived it OK. But it's up to you.

my dd was a terrible sleeper until I put her on her tummy - a miracle! she was so much more comfy. We did it when she was about 5 months old and we wish we'd done it sooner. After 4 nights she was sleeping through the night!!!!!! if you think it might work, do it, just make sure there aren't any things in the cot your son mihgt get tangled up in ( cot bumpers etc).

DD had colic when she was born and we couldn't settle her but found she became settled on her belly, so for first 6 weeks she was in our room slept in the cot on her belly then put her in her own room she is 3now still sleeps on her belly, go with your gut instinct.

mummytojames · 21/06/2004 20:50

my ds on his stomach for the entire time he had colic and my attitude was if he sleeps not in pain and can move his head then that was fine for me
the official is lieing on there backs but then again i never listen to much of what they got to say because they have this habbitof putting our babies in general and only we know them best

dd slept on her belly from about 8 weeks - preferred this. She could roll over from about 3 months or so - I did fret until she could do this though.

busybee123, look at my post on your other thread. I highly recommend tummy sleeping in your case as it may just be the solution to your problems.
