So dh has stopped smoking, but the gum chewing is driving me insane......

So insane I want to smash his head in. He constantly has a piece of nicorette gum in his gob and I hate it. I hear the chewing noise constantly, I see the gum when he speaks to me, sometimes he even talks with it hanging out slightly. AND he's even started taking it of his mouth and playing with it, then chewing it again.

I know it's only trivial, but seriously, I'm on the edge here. (and pre menstrual!)

Last night I mentioned it to him (well actually screamed at him) he now thinks I'm not supportive and he might as well just light up again.

Men!

I understand, dh has been chewing that bloody stuff for 4 1/2 years, and his jaw clicks really loudly!

sponge · 18/06/2004 12:46

Give the poor bugger a break. At least he's given up smoking which is much more important.
Leave it until he's given up for long enough for you to feel it might be a permanent thing - then start nagging him about the gum if he's still at it.

'ave a bit of compassion, lady! He's doing his best!

Chandra · 18/06/2004 12:48

Dear God! how do you deal with it? It drives me crazy in American airports to hear so many people chewing around me, but 4.5 years, dear you both should be saints

Northerner · 18/06/2004 12:48

lou 4 1/2 years? Bloody hell! I thought the idea was to wean yourself off it?

Hi Northerner

Sorry but I am with your dh on this one. Not sure if you smoke or if you have ever tried to give up but it is incredibly hard. I am lucky that falling pregnant has been sufficient motivation to give up so I have not had to resort to nicotine replacement.

Maybe if you try to concentrate on the positive aspects of him giving up (saving money, no more stink, benefits to his health) it might make the chewing easier to bear ??

Sorry but had to stick up for him as I know how hard it really is...

Love
Dejags

Yes it is, but he just swapped one for the other! Cheaper though. Docs have said not to worry about it, but I do worry for his personal health and safety when the clicky jaw gets too much for me. And he is in the doghouse a bit, as you will learn by my chat thread, "last night".

"So insane I want to smash his head in"

lol

Northerner · 18/06/2004 12:52

De Jags. Yeah I smoked 10/15 a day but gave up for New Year using the Alan Carr method. I know how hard it is.

My rant was pretty much tongue and cheek - you know those times when they simply breathe the wrong way and you want to punch them? That's how I was feeling last night I guess.

Must be something in the air Northener, I called dh a f**ker last night!

dejags · 18/06/2004 12:56

didn't catch the tongue in cheek...

Hi Northerner, I sympathise totally with the gum thing - my dh has been through that stage and failed to give up. Now he is trying the patches and claims they don't stay on!! A couple of nights ago I went out to my car to get something and caught him redhanded having a sneaky fag ... he looked really guilty and claimed that the patch had come off due to excess sweat and that it was only a small lapse and etc etc ... yeah right. Why can't he just admit that his motivation to give up isn't strong enough and he'll try again sometime in the future?? I know I'm being an unsupportive old bag but I can't stand it any more!

codswallop · 18/06/2004 13:15

no but htat was quite a throw away
