there are 13. They took on timothy(????think it was him) to replace Judas in the Acts of the apostles. I think he was the one who later fell out of a window and was raised from the dead

HuwEdwards · 16/02/2007 17:31

Thought there were 13...?
(am v.lapsed catholic tho)

Marscentio · 16/02/2007 17:32

Paul/Saul was not a disciple. He is however the Apostle Paul.

And I'm reasonably sure that Matthias was the disciple taken on to replace Judas... but to be honest I'd have to check.

Simon: called Peter (Grk. petros, petra; Aram. kēf; Engl. rock) by Jesus, also known as Simon bar Jonah and Simon bar Jochanan (Aram.) and earlier (Pauline Epistles were written first) Cephas (Aram.) by Paul of Tarsus and Simon Peter, a fisherman from Bethsaida "of Galilee" (John 1:44; cf. 12:21)
Andrew: brother of Peter, a Bethsaida fisherman and disciple of John the Baptist, and also the First-Called Apostle
James and
John: sons of Zebedee, called by Jesus Boanerges (an Aramaic name explained in Mk 3:17 as "Sons of Thunder")
Philip: from Bethsaida "of Galilee" (John 1:44, 12:21)
Bartholomew: in Aramaic "bar-Talemai?", "son of Talemai" or from Ptolemais, some identify with Nathanael
Thomas: also known as Judas Thomas Didymus - Aramaic T'oma' = twin, and Greek Didymous = twin
James: commonly identified with James the Less and sometimes with James, brother of Jesus[1]
Matthew: the tax collector, some identify with Levi son of Alphaeus
Simon the Canaanite: called in Luke and Acts "Simon the Zealot", some identify with Simeon of Jerusalem[2]
Judas Iscariot: the name Iscariot may refer to the Judaean towns of Kerioth or to the sicarii (Jewish nationalist insurrectionists

don't forget Petra the dog

MrsGoranVisnjic · 16/02/2007 17:44

I was watching a documentary about the fact that there were probably female aposltes but as the Bible and church has been built on the word of 'man' through the ages they have necessarily been left out

supposedly many texts have been found from the time to corroborate it

religion eh?

PeachyClairColouredRoses · 16/02/2007 17:45

And everyone knows the line of jesus is from his secret liasons with the she apostle simone petra yes?

Ladymuck · 16/02/2007 17:46

Peachy's list seems to omit Thaddaeus. If you include him that is the list from the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 10 vv2-4.

PeachyClairColouredRoses · 16/02/2007 17:46

That's the lost gospels (see I know these things really! should do LOL- halfway through a religion degree )

gospel of St Thomas and the like

much softer, nicer brand of Christianity imo

PeachyClairColouredRoses · 16/02/2007 17:46

Peachy cannot count to twelve that's why

littlemissnobody · 16/02/2007 17:47

lol at this thread!

Now I'm confused - I thought there were 12 Apostles + Judas (making 13) which is why 13 is an unlucky number as he was the traitor...

Need to go away and find out about this now!

Ladymuck · 16/02/2007 17:50

Just to add confusion, the Gospel of Luke (6:14-16) omits Thaddeus and has a second Judas, being Judas son of James.

SaintGeorge · 16/02/2007 17:52

Peter
Andrew
John
Philip
Bartholomew
Thomas
Matthew
James the Less
Jude
Simon
Matthias
James the Greater

Tortington · 16/02/2007 18:12
