if you are a married woman, it is appropriate and respectful to cover your hair, with a hat, fascinator or scarf !

also, no decolletage (Sp) showing in synagogue, arms should be covered to past your elbow and legs to past the knee

a lot of women will have pashmina or wrap over their outfit, if it does not fulfil those criteria

is it an orthodox or reform wedding? less strict if reform..if it is orthodox, men and women do not sit together

Thanks. Very useful

It's in a synagogue but don't know if orthodox or reform.

worth finding out if you can as reform more relaxed as regards hats etc.

mumtolily · 16/02/2007 10:01

Are reform more relaxed about dress cos the one I've got is quite revealing

even if it is orthodox or reform wear a hat/feathery thing as they are fab!!!! If your dress is revealing just wear a wrap or something during the ceremony - your DP/DH will need to cover his head with a yarmulke in the synagogue regardless of whether it is reform or orthodox

lulumama · 16/02/2007 10:17

can be, but still need a modicum of decency ! take a pashmina /wrap/ jacket . it is still a religious ceremony

lulumama · 16/02/2007 10:18

yoo hoo taylormama! xx

lulumama · 16/02/2007 10:19

in Judaism, only a woman;s husband is to see her crowning glory , her hair..! that is why orthodox , religious jewish women where a hat/ wig/ hair covering at all times....

I suppose it's because hair is supposed to be a woman's most beautiful feature in many cultures, so that's why it gets covered maybe?

ComeOVeneer · 16/02/2007 10:25

Most of the jewish weddings I have been to provide yumulkes (sp) for the men (they tend to have special ones made with the date and bride/grooms name inside as a keepsake.

it makes it more special and sensual for the husband to be the only one to see his wife;s hair....

When I first started going out with dh (non practising jew) I was surprised at how many of the women who lived in the area of London he lived in (high Jewish population) had the same hairstyle, mid/dark brown shoulderish length bobs. It was a couple of years befor ehe pointed out it was infact that they were all wearing wigs .

lulumama · 16/02/2007 10:29

my cousin is married to a rabbi, part of our family is very orthodox....she has several wigs, or sheitels as they are called, a bob, an elfin cut, a long one and a party sheitel!

Actually I frequently wish I had a range of wigs , would make bad hair days a thing of the past .
