Okay...bit of an odd one..info needed to help me with something at work, figured MN as a huge source of knowledge on this sort of thing so...

If a MW has worked in an acute hospital setting and then moves to work in the community...does she/he need a further qualification/training to be able to do that?

Because, in the community a MW could attend a home birth which could become complicated and the MW has to handle it without Consultant support available there and then...

any thoughts??

No further training required. The 3 year course should be rigorous enough to ensure that every qualified m/w can deal with these situations. Even in hospital the dr isn't always there - ie; tied up in theatre.

Where I train they used to say minimun of 2 years qualification before they'd consider you for a community post. And in reality it was more likely 10 years. Now they are short staffed and desperate and newly qualfied m/ws are in community.
