And we don't drop hot sausage rolls, dear, we blend them, put them in a bottle, and poke a hot pin through the teat.

Can i just intrude on this thread and say that i am sick to death of my MIL (and her mother) saying "he's so forward for his age"... is he??? Then that must mean that all the books, web info and general info available to me are 'forward' too!!

Yes he can sit up, yes he can crawl, yes he can pull himself up to standing, yes he can feed himself..i could go on

Rant over - thanks!!

dejags · 13/02/2007 10:10

what I really hate is when people aim well meant but crap advice at me because my kids were big.

medics, family and friends alike.

oh and the "who's a hungry baby then?" comments from a particular aunt.

I pray for a petite baby this time round, as I don't think I could go through this again.

kiskidee · 13/02/2007 10:16

popping over to Weaning now to see what all the fuss is about.

MrsJohnCusack · 13/02/2007 10:18

a friend of mine went into a book shop in Richmond and waited whilst various proud mammas/grandmamas asked for advice on what books to buy for children who were all advanced, or ahead of their age, or very bright unt bla unt bla

finally she went up and said 'anything new and good for my 2 and half year old. She's completely normal'

the shop assistant burst out laughing and said 'finally - noone EVER says that'

anyway
I like that story

do HVs know how to speak without simpering?

I can't face phoning mine, she left a message yesterday, I deleted it because it was full of simpering and now can't remember the number she left....

hunkermunker · 13/02/2007 10:26

It could have roots in that, couldn't it, Pruni.

Funny (not ha ha) that the reason some babies are weaned early is because they are "big and hungry" or because they're "little and need feeding up".

I wonder if most HVs actually listen to what they are saying ever?

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 13/02/2007 10:27

Yes, Ae - they can also

As in "Come along now, that baby's had quite enough breastmilk, crack open the formula/baby rice/McDonald's"

Was there ever a more reviled profession than HV's?

They do get on your tits when they call round to the house but I found them quite useful when visiting clinic.

dejags · 13/02/2007 10:30

aw so what your saying Hunker is that I am f*cked either way .

I never, for a second, gave it a thought that the family would pressure me to wean early if the baby is small. On reflection, I really think they will.

Big, little, makes no difference. Interfering old bats.

Ceebee74 · 13/02/2007 10:30

It isn't just HV's though - one of my RL friends had a 'big baby' (who is now 6 months old) - they had him on hungry baby formula from day 1, started weaning him at 14 weeks (ffs!), bought a front-facing carseat at about 4.5 months (again, ffs!) etc etc - all justified by themselves because he is 'a big lad!'

frenziednester · 13/02/2007 10:33

DS1 was huge, which i was oblivious to most of the time as he was such a pants feeder (still is - I swear that child photosynthesises), but when my FIL used to really annoy me with his constant criticisms (about twice an hour per visit) I used to say 'well, he's big because he takes after my father and uncles who are all over 6' 2") - FIL is 5' in stacked heels.... although it shut him up for once, I really got my come uppance when DS2 was born, who is diddy (but eats like a horse, go figure), and now at 20 months is still wearing 6-12 month trousers.....! So I am a bit 'simper sensitive' too now

MrsJohnCusack · 13/02/2007 10:33

anyway I've completely missed the point of this! sorry....

Ceebee, yes, that's just the sort of thing I mean. Usually people justify it by saying "but the HV said it was OK" but really they mean "we'd have done it anyway, because he looks like a rugby prop".

OP posts:
Ceebee74 · 13/02/2007 10:39

Hunker - I know for a fact that none of their ideas were provided by HV's - my friend is quite proud of the fact that her Ds was weaned early etc (when I didn't start weaning my average-sized DS who is 1 month older until he was 6 months)! I think she likes to be ahead of me on somethings as she was gutted that I got pregnant first so would experience everything first

Plus, I have to question the shop that sold them the car seat as they were encouraged by the shop owner to buy and use it at 4.5 months - I mean, surely shop owners should not be encouraging unsafe practices???

NadineBaggott · 13/02/2007 10:40

How's your brother now Pruni?

Aefondkiss · 13/02/2007 10:50

really do I have to phone the HV? the thought of her trilling really makes me shudder

could I just say oh I never listen to my messages >simper

is he still a 'whopper' though?

MrsJohnCusack · 13/02/2007 10:59

i went to some postnatal group thing run by HVs
on the subject of weaning, they said that as 37 weeks was considered full term, then if your baby was born at 41 weeks you could wean 4 weeks early....or at 40 weeks 3 weeks early and so on

I had a ginormous fatty baby and people were desperate for me to start giving her solids, whereas I was dreading it...why anyone would want to do it as early as poss is a bit of a mystery to me - such a faff

anyway, am rambling again
shoild go to bed
