pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 20:59

I would say- eye-lish

worzella · 10/02/2007 20:59

I'd say Ay - lish. Irish origin...

pointydog · 10/02/2007 21:00

ay-lish

mamama · 10/02/2007 21:02

My friend is called Eilish, pronounced eye-lish.

bobblehead · 10/02/2007 21:03

I like eye-lish best, but don't want to be forever told I'm pronouncing my childs name wrong!

If it is from Ireland it is pronounced eye-lish.

TheArmadillo · 10/02/2007 21:03

According to the internet (which as we know is the ultimate authority on everything ):
It can be pronounce either way.
Some claim it is gaelic in orgin and some claim it is hebrew.

It means god is my oath.

And can be derived from either Ellis or Elizabeth depending on what you read.

pointydog · 10/02/2007 21:08

oh ok

It is my dd2's name!!

We pronounce it eye-lish, but have heard it pronounced ay-lish - we are in Scotland and a lot of people call her ay-lish (presumably because Eilidh (ay-lie) is a popular name here)

We picked it for its Irish origins and I have heard it pronounced both ways by Irish people.

Skribble · 10/02/2007 21:27

ay-lish def irish origins meaning "Oath of God"

Miaou · 10/02/2007 21:36

Btw, I know two Eilishes (as well as dd2 obviously) - both are Irish. One is Eye-lish and one is Ay-lish.

NannyL · 10/02/2007 22:07

its Ay-lish (like the letter "A")

(my best friends aunt is scottish and has this name, think she origintaes from irelnad as well)

MrsBadger · 10/02/2007 22:10

you could spell it Iylish and make it really obvious how you want it pronounced...

tirnanog · 10/02/2007 22:26

Ay-lish

tirnanog · 10/02/2007 22:30

Irish origin meaning Oath of God

sorry if that is repeating what has already been posted

Spidermama · 10/02/2007 22:31

Nice name either way. Lovely.

bobblehead · 11/02/2007 00:02

I think so

Now just need to work on the middle name....
