Bidding on Ebay - 15 minutes left - help!

Freddiecat · 13/06/2004 22:01

I have bid on Ebay for something - first time - and have been the highest bidder for a couple of days then with 30 minutes left someone else comes in and tops me.

I don't want to start a bidding war so what do I do? It's currently £2 above what I said was my highest (was £2 below before they bid).

That's what happens. I was bidding on something that was at £5 with 10 minutes to go. Now it's sold at £13 and I quit bidding at £11. You have to decide how much you're willing to pay and stick to it or else you'll get stung.

mummysurfer · 13/06/2004 22:04

don't do it.
i sell on eBay and often get lots more thean the article is worth because people don't want to lose.

madgirl · 13/06/2004 22:05

ditto what flip said. what are you bidding for? do they come up regularly?

pesme · 13/06/2004 22:06

Lots of people go crazy on Ebay and pay nearly as much as a thing is worth new. Know when to walk away, it is addictive!

madgirl · 13/06/2004 22:06

mind you i just got a double buggy (maclaren) for £50 which i am chuffed about. that's interesting mummysurfer.

Freddiecat · 13/06/2004 22:06

I am crap at this. It's all too psycological for me to be honest. The price I am "willing" to pay is so arbitrary.

Are you ready for an ebaby tip of a lifetime...?

To make sure you get whatever it is...bid 15 seconds before the end...that way nobody else has a chance to out bid you !!

Freddiecat · 13/06/2004 22:08

yes but what if you bid less than their max? it's a double 3 wheel pushchair btw (no one go on and outbid me now.,...)

happycat · 13/06/2004 22:09

I do that too it has happened to me before

mummysurfer · 13/06/2004 22:10

good idea chickpea

i saw a girl's dress go for £26.01 a cuple of weeks ago, they're only £32 new and thee's no P&P!!

i sold a paur of second hand doodles for £7 plus £2 P&P

pesme · 13/06/2004 22:10

chicpea, i hate it when people do that! I did win a macpac today though. Someone did try that 15 second thing, twice, I still won by a quid. How good did I feel!

sammac · 13/06/2004 22:12

This will be too late for this but you can use www.bidmate.co.uk and they will put in your maximum 10/15 seconds before the end, there's others too. Some you win ...but it's so easy to get sucked into spending just a bit more, but it's good news for the sellers.

Freddiecat · 13/06/2004 22:15

oh i'm out - 5 people bidding now and went from 80 to 120 in 2 mins

tammybear · 13/06/2004 22:32

what i usually do is, if possible, wait til there's only 2/3 minutes left on the bid, and then put a high maximum bid that I am willing to pay, and usually I am the winning bidder. A tip to save you from entering a bid war, and then end up paying more than you bargained for!

pesme · 13/06/2004 22:33

good to know mummysurfer. Did you have the rain cover?

mummysurfer · 14/06/2004 08:21

we had a raincover, not a Macpac one, just a cheaper version. worked perfectly though.
tbh it didn't need to be 100% waterproof as we wouldn't set off in the rain and if it started we only went as far as to get out of it quickly as they both hated it, even using a brollie. propbably the noise.
dd was terrified when we first put her in it. we had to practice around the house a few minutes at a time.

Freddiecat · 14/06/2004 08:44

Cannot believe some people buying on Ebay do so little research. The pushchair I was looking to buy went for £120. 2 minutes on Google found the same one, brand new from a good site for £9.99 more - with free postage..... Maybe I should just buy it new and sell it in 6 months with a really good ad on Ebay!

I know what you mean. I got a 80's Ghostbuster firestation for £11.50 with loads of figures and the light and sound ambulance. Something similar with no ambulance went for £40 the other day. As if I would pay £40. Mines for ds1 to play with, not for a collection. He's mad on Ghostbusters.
