As you may be aware (because I go on about it so much!!) my MIL uses my address as her own (she lives in Spain) without asking our permission. So far the DVLA, car insurance, driving licence dept, her doctors, her bank, the place where she keeps her holiday home (in england), mobile phone billing, and many other "institutions" think she lives at our address. She's due back tomorrow and I just popped to the loft to get her "documents" bag out in readiness for tomorrow. It was unzipped and I took a sneaky look inside and literally in front of me was her driving licence (which she uses as proof of residence I assume). Should I take it and lose it thereby making her apply for a new one (which she shouldn't do as she doesn't live in England)? I think I probably know what I should do but it conflicts with what I want to do... Help........

my one sis is urging me to take it (which I had done) but my other sis thinks its completely wrong to take it (we still have the bag so I am able to put it back). I know I should just explain again that they can't use our address and trust them to change their details. when they bought their holiday home I typed out a standard letter and copied it about a dozen times stating that their new address was XXXXXXXX but she threw them in my bin...

Be very careful about allowing someone to use your address - it can totally screw up your credit hisory. Happened to my dad when him and mum had lodgers- different surname- but most checks just check the address.

I think you need to have this out with them. they probably can't use the park home address (if its a holiday type place) as most don't allow year long residency.

Is her car being driven in Spain? officially UK insurers shouldn't insure cars that aren't here permanently, so thier car insurance will be invalid. So sucks to be the person they run over iyswim. What they are doing sounds dodgy to me- and I think you need to put a stop to it. Lay down the law with your dh!

Well we've just been to see them for a couple of hours and tbh they were okay although MIL asked if I'd stopped my diet!!!!!

I decided to leave the licence (actually put it back because I had taken it) and told dh if he didn't want to broach the subject I would do it. Although I desperately wanted to take the licence in the long term it wouldn't solve the situation just make it uncomfortable for them for a while. They are looking to buy a car to use when they're in england so it will give me a perfect opportunity to remind them to use their own address and to change everything else. Thanks so much for talking me in and out of this dilemma
