Dh is planning on buying a new laptop and he needs a good one as he does alot of scientific programming and has really big files etc. It's going to be expensive but at the same time he is applying for jobs in UK and USA and even New Zealand. Would he be able to use a german bought laptop? I've told him to ask at the shop but some times you get a shop assistant who wil tell you what ever you want to hear just to make a sale.

He's also going to Japan in May and I was wondering about that too, he has to stay a week so one fully loaded battery won't last long, will he ba able to plug it in in Japan? Any well travelled mner's advice?

He may have to get a plug adaptor for power, but the lap top should be ok.

My BIL lives and workes in Germany but he bought his lap top in the UK, but in the 2 years he has been to Japan, Australia and the USA and he always takes his lap top as it has all his information on it.

Thanks! Did he also plug in when he was in USA? Or just work on battery? I couldn't find it but I read a thread here saying that they have totally different mains electric. I suppose he could take 2 fully charged batteries to Japan just in case.

When he buys his new laptop I'll try and get them to throw in an international adaptor thing too. It's going to cost a fortune and I think they've talked him into a very professional one so they should manage that into the deal, better go along when he buys as dh is rubbish at getting deals done!

He would have charged it as he runs slide shows from it.

He was Japan for 2 weeks, Australia for 3 weeks and USA for 6 weeks.

You only need a plug adaptor, not a transformer, as the plug for the laptop will accept 120/240 (it will say as much on the plug, or on the box on the power wire).

Phone chargers always accept 120/240, too, so you just need a plug adaptor.

We used to always travel with a transformer when going to Canada or Japan or the US, and recently noticed that all our electrical stuff just needed the plug adaptors.

Thanks NotQuiteCockney, that was exactly what I was wondering about, heard oftransformers but wasn'tsure if they were always neede. We will get a normal adapter then if we move to the UK then he can go ahead and buy his longed for new laptop (men and their toys!) and I can have his old one - mobility atlast!
