Oh Sh*t! DD2 16 months fell all the way down the stairs. She seems OK. I'm shaking. How can she be OK? Is she OK?

I'm still shaking. I left the gate open at the top as DD1 went downstairs to get something. I went into DD2's room to get her clothes out and then heard a sueal and a thud and I instantly felt sick, knowing what had happened.

DD2 was at the bottom of the stairs. She was crying. I picked her up and she cried for a bit. She doesn't seem hurt. She's got down from me and is moving around and appears as happy as before.

Can she be OK? She must have fallen from the top as she's a botoom shuffler and so can't do stairs.

Do I need to get her checked out? Where? She seems so fine but I don't know how she can be. I'm not fine. I feel sick with the shock and can't stop shaking.

I don't know if this helps - my DS fell down the whole flight of stairs a couple of weeks ago... at 10 1/2 months old

Not a mark on him - got him checked out, they said he just boucned in the way that only babies can.

She should be fine

You can let a child nap after a fall, as long as you check them on often and can rouse them.

A doctor will not laugh at you if you want to get her checked out.

Watch for blue colouring around the eyes. That's not good.

Hope you are both fine.

ds1 went all the way down, headfirst on his back then crashed into the wall at the bottom at around 14 months. like your lo, once the initial shock had passed he was fine.
every time i have been to a&e they ask, was he knocked out?
waS he sick?
then when i say no, we can go home.
their bones are still green at this stage to allow for exploration and tumbles. the bones have a bit of 'give'/flexibility iyswim?

oooh, these stories make me shudder but at the same time it is amazing what kids can suffer but not feel ill effects from.....

I just couldn't believe that ds had not fractured his skull when I heard his bump on the patio but he was bright and breezy within five minutes! As you say Ladyoftheflowers, their bones are softer for good reason.......

Pavlovthecat · 01/02/2007 12:48

Aw you poor thing. I am sure she is fine but I agree you probably need some tlc now to calm your nerves.

Only last week at friends house getting ready to leave , friends dd at the top, came tumbling down managed to catch her before she hit the bottom. I think i was more shaken than her, first time I have ever seen a child take a tumble down stairs (one I hope not to witness again).

LieselVentouse · 01/02/2007 13:30

Is she screaming her head off? Then shes ok. DD did thiswhen she was 8months butmy mum said if shes screamingher head off then shes fine.

Aderyn · 01/02/2007 14:07

Thank you everyone again. It helps a lot. We have been out and she's been as normal. I have just put her down for a nap so I will check on her periodically.

Aderyn - I can certainly sympathise, it's quite terrifying, isn't it! When it happened to my daughter, I rang the health visitor and she said to look out for clear fluid coming out of her ears or nose, or vomiting. (Obviously, don't confuse snot with clear fluid, LOL)

Best wishes

Aderyn, I can so symapthise with you. It really is amazing how bouncy they are at this age though, and she really is probably fine.

dt2 is 23 months, and last week 3was put up for a nap, opened his bedroom window and jumped out - fell 10 foot on to the drive. I found out from a neighbour who thought he had been locked out. I drove like a maniac all the way to A&E convinced he must have done himself serious injuries. Both his legs were xrayed, but by the time we got back from the xray he was walking aroudn again and smiling! He got away with a bit of swellign and bruising and limped for a few days. Like frenchleave said, they don't tense up so often don't get injured. Very scary though!

Aderyn · 01/02/2007 16:27

Goodness Kelly - how terrifying for you.

They are bouncy little buggers arent they?

Glad its all okay

Jessajam · 01/02/2007 16:32

DS went sideways and backwards down the stairs a few months ago, he was just climbing up them, and is good at this usually, just had a 'moment' and off he went!

I picked him up and cuddled him (while my heart thumped around in the back of my mouth!)checking for bumps/cuts/sticking out bones...he carried on crying...until I realised now he was crying because he didn't want a cuddle, he wanted me to let him go so he could climb back up the flimmin' stairs

WriggleJiggle · 01/02/2007 16:35

You poor thing Aderyn. It's such a shock isn't it. You definitely need a nice big mug of coffee, with a little something added .

Skyler · 01/02/2007 16:39

I watched helplessly last week as dd2 (19mths) tumbled literally head over heels down the stairs. I screamed with fear and yelled her name and DH ran to the bottom of the steps. Suffice to say I cried more than she did and was def more affected shaking etc. She cried a little and accepted a quick cuddle before she was off to chase the dog. There was not a mark on her after a very thorough going over from me.
It is awful but they are surprisingly resiliant. Hope you are feeling better.
