I have learned first aid for choking, moondog. Among other things, they teach you that you can't always dislodge the food and people do die even with immediate first aid. I could always qualify as a doctor to learn to do an emergency tracheotomy, I suppose, but frankly it's cheaper and less bother just to cut up the grapes (I know, I know, it's that kind of lazy attitude that has brought the world to its current state...)

I once choked on a vitamin pill

Nearly killed myself

Had haemorrages in both eyes from the force of my vomit reflex getting it back up

I was 24

sorry MP, it's not a laughing matter

I used to think that people who cut their toddler's grapes in half were over-protective twats until I found out about my colleague's dd who choked to death on a whole grape when she was 2.
Now I always cut them in two.....and probably will till my dd's at least 10

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll stick to chopping up for my dc's - it was at someone else's party - I wouldn't serve grapes ata aparty either tbh

My dog (a dachshund) ate a whole cocktial sausage including the stick in one go one christmas. THat was at a party too.

He was okay.

I'd cut the grapes. I'd serve a huge platter of cut-up grapes, strawberries, apple wedges, banana chunks, whatever is in season / on special offer / looks nice...dried fruits...loads and loads and really yummy nad appetizing looking. I always do these for my dcs' parties and the whole lot gets devoured (by parents too who feel less guilty about snacking on fruit!)

Like jimjams I still cut up grapes for ds2's lunch bag - he's in reception as well. My friend's little boy nearly died choking on a grape a couple of years ago.

I do serve grapes at children's parties and I do cut them up. So ner!

IntergalacticWalrus · 31/01/2007 19:34

DS1 won;t even eat a farking grape. I do try and coax him into it by telling him they are sweeties, but he's not daft.

I do cut them up, but I spend the whole time I am cutting thinking why am I bothering when I'll end up eating them myself

dd adores grapes, un fact is very greedy about them, but I have always cut them up.

At parties, when they've been served whole, I end up spliting them/biting in half etc. Don't really care what others think.

When her mad great aunt offers a malteaser, I have to endure a tantrum while I split it.

When I was at school aged 9ish, a friend choked on a marble (small one) suffered severe brain damage.

I might be 'overprotective' but choking is a serious issue and has severe consequences.

Was the party in a supermarket and had the grapes been paid for?
