What sort of stuff will sell at a carboot?

We are having a loft conversion done starting in the middle of July. At the moment the floor of the loft is completely full of what I would call junk. The loft is going to be turned into two medium size bedrooms so you can imagine how much stuff I've got.

What sort of stuff can I sell at a carboot?

I've only done one and I was amazed to find that almost everything sells! Someone even tried to buy the table that we were setting things out on. Price things up before you go, but be prepared to haggle. Take lots of plastic bags. Have lots of change and enjoy!

IMHO any kind of $hite sells. A woman once bought a pair of reading glasses from me for 10p (!) and half a roll of wallpaper from my friend.

littlerach · 05/06/2004 11:20

Agree that anything sells, I did one a couple of weeks ago, as we are moving, so sold lots of junk. People will buy anything cheap, but my friend also sold a DVD player and VCR, so bigger stuff sells too.

I have a full size traffic bollard which has a light switch and a lamp inside. Dh says I can't sell that. What do you think?

Pretty much anything will sell at a carboot sale. One person's junk is another person's treasure!

jampot · 05/06/2004 11:38

Definitely sell it flip!

Mirage · 05/06/2004 15:39

Oh yes,I am constantly amazed at what people will pay good money for at car boots.I have sold stuff that I had nearly taken to the tip before,as I was convinced no one would want it-but they did.

My sisters friend sold a toilet brush & holder at a car boot & it wasn't new either.Yeuchhh!

dottee · 05/06/2004 15:46

Kids clothes and toys really go well. Have a go at selling anything. Be prepared for the rush when you arrive at the plot. The traders like to get in first (in case you have the odd Noritake or Nat West pig!). Whatever you do, don't come home with more than you take to sell!

Bettybloo · 05/06/2004 16:17

Anything - so long as its cheap enough. The stuff you think is the most awful is usually the first to go.
Mirage - I SAW a lav brush for sale at one - filthy - for £2! And the woman selling it looked most offended that I laughed! Hope it wasn't your friend.

ladymuck · 05/06/2004 16:22

My parents sold dbro's set of 5 Natwest pigs at their first car boot auction. They were surprised when someone rushed up before they had even unloaded the car. They sold all 5 for £3! Needless to say they are more clued up now!

Flip · 05/06/2004 16:29

I have 3 NatWest Pigs. Are they worth a lot?

OP posts:
jampot · 05/06/2004 16:35

I'll buy them for £2

Flip · 05/06/2004 16:35

Having just looked on ebay , no chance!

those little pendelfin rabbit things are quite valuable too

posyhairdresser · 05/06/2004 17:02

What prices do childrens clothes usually make?
Eg Recent Next stuff in good condition?

charliecat · 05/06/2004 17:13

Youdd be better off with the next stuff on ebay

charliecat · 05/06/2004 17:13

Youdd be better off with the next stuff on ebay

Mirage · 05/06/2004 20:39

I agree with Charliecat-Next stuff is very popular on Ebay, but I pay 25-50p an item at car boots,so if you're selling,I'd try Ebay 1st.

Bettybloo-Oh no-I'd have laughed too.Was it in Stoke on Trent by any chance?

when our cylinder hoover died, I took the hose and sold it (much to dh's amazement) but then discovered to get a replacement would have cost a £10. So its really one person's junk is another's treasure. Be warned you'll find a lot of pretty horrid people making snide remarks. And traders being quite pushy. But good luck.

BadHair · 06/06/2004 13:27

Flip - was your bollard acquired from roadworks or a public highway? If so then I wouldn't even try to sell it as technically its nicked.
Although you could always whip it out of the boot for short bursts throughout the day to see if anyone was interested.

Mirage · 06/06/2004 20:25

Ohh,never thought of selling sachets-I've got a drawerful upstairs that I'll never use.
