We have two digital thermometers, neither of which work.

I just kiss my kids on the forehead, and trust my instincts, tbh. Thankfully, I don't think either of them has really ever had a fever, certainly not a severe one.

ledodgy · 23/01/2007 21:44

No ours broke ages ago I tend to use the kiss test it's supposed to be about 70 per cent accurate.

Hattie05 · 23/01/2007 21:45

no, i don't either . My hand works quite well

nearlythree · 23/01/2007 21:45

We have two, one upstairs and one down. Wouldn't be without one tbh, our dcs get a lot of temps and I rely on them for giving meds etc.

Biglips · 23/01/2007 21:46

Yes Hattie - i use my hand too

Lips are more sensitive.

TrinityRhino · 23/01/2007 21:47

we have one somewhere but I wouldn't be able to lay my hands on it

I kiss their forehead and use my judgement, I kiss them on forehead or feel their bare skin enought when they aren't ill to feel a change

Also a high temp is usually accompanied by flushed face and wet eyes, you can just tell by the look of them that something is up

Obviously each child is different but I think each mother could tell the difference between a slight raised temp and a high raised temp that need doctors attention in their own child

nearlythree · 23/01/2007 21:47

My gp came today to see baby ds who is unwell, she felt him and said, he's hot - then took his temp and found it was normal.

My dcs have had shocking fevers, and I needed it when pg and I got a fever - I had to be able to tell the delivery unit what my temp was - they rushed me in in case I went into labour.

TheArmadillo · 23/01/2007 21:48

I don't have one.
Not sure whether thats a good thing or a bad one.

Biglips · 23/01/2007 21:51

thearmadillo - i wonder that too as my dd is now 2.3yrs old and i know by now if her temp is up as she sweat like a pig!!

my gp told me off for feeling the forehead, dont have a thermometer either, such a struggle to take it when they're ill, used to feel back of neck, anyway, when they're ill, they're ill..

NotQuiteCockney · 23/01/2007 21:53

My hands are always freezing. If I relied on my hands, I'd think my kids were feverish 24/7.

I do think you need a thermometer more if your kids tend to get real fevers - a friend of mine has a DS who has had febrile convulsions.

Hmmm, anyway, if I had too, I could get a guess at their temperature using the meat probe, I guess? Maybe not.

nearlythree · 23/01/2007 22:01

NQC, my dd2 had a collapse that was due to a temp/febrile convulsion type thing - dh was in hospital with me and baby ds and my parents couldn't work the thermometer properly and missed she was getting hot. My dc's highest temp was over 40. I know when they have a temp but I get so much reassurance when it's not that high.

pointydog · 23/01/2007 22:01

I've never had a thermometer. I have very cold extremities but I use my magical hands.

Just normal sort of illnesses here though.

bandstand · 23/01/2007 22:02

yes, i misread the thermometer once.... panic stations up to the GP...

NotQuiteCockney · 23/01/2007 22:03

Yeah, nearlythree, when we had working digital thermometers, mine never had a fever. Since they've all been dead, and we gave up on replacing them, I think DS1 maybe had a fever once, but it wasn't severe. In fact, he's never really been ill, well, not in any sort of normal way (He was a bit paralysed. Twice. We never found out what it was.).

And DS2 has never really been ill, not ill enough to miss anything, ever, I don't think.

NotQuiteCockney · 23/01/2007 22:04

Oh, and I don't want a normal thermometer, because I bit through a few of them as a child. [mad as a hatter emoticon]

pianist · 23/01/2007 22:10

Have never had one.
If they feel hot, Nurofen does the trick!

Muddle · 23/01/2007 22:13

Nope, we haven't got one either. If I go to the doctors and mention that the dcs weren't well a few weeks before they always ask me if they had a temperature. I just say "No"!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/01/2007 22:19

I don't have one. Dd's normal temp is quite low so what I feel is a high temp for her isn't that high on a thermometer IYSWIM.

Jimjams2 · 23/01/2007 22:23

I rarely use ours. Mine run such high temps when ill it's obvious. I only ever take it if I think it's gone above 40 (then struggle to find it).

OrmIrian · 24/01/2007 13:17

I don't use one. If a child has a raised temp there is usually also another symptom that they will be more likely to complain about. And if it's very raised it's quite obvious.

I think we have one - a freebie from SureStart or something. Don't use it. Freaks my mum out totally. She thinks I'm weird.

CAMy · 24/01/2007 13:20

I have got one, have never had one. My mother never took our temperature when we were children either.

paulaplumpbottom · 24/01/2007 13:24

I have loads but use the kissing method to. Works much better.

tinkerbellie · 24/01/2007 13:36

we don't use i find my hand workd much btter than that stpuid lastic strip you sticj on their forehead!!
