My garage and house are full of junk...... (rant)

.....and it is driving me potty!!
We moved back from Cyprus nearly a year ago and our garage is still full of boxes of crap that I had good intentions of car booting. I can't stand looking in there. DH doesn't seem to care but it makes me want to explode.
In the house we have no storage and boxes and boxes full of paperwork we don't need and a wardrobe full of clothes that dd1 has grown out of but dd2 has not yet grown into.
Plus baby toys we no longer need. We have a double buggy I need to sell as well as car seats and boxes of dh's uniform and bloody sports kit he says he needs.
I can't bear to throw it as it seems so wasteful but realistically am I going to car boot it this year? can I wait that long for the decent weather to do it in? should I try ebay or is that more hassle than it is worth or should I just get a big skip. Will I feel better when it has all gone? Is there a charity that could use kitchen stuff/tea towels/ baby toys etc?
Arrgh help me! I feel I am drowning in this rubbish. It is overwhelming me at the mo.
I am off to make MarsLady's Lemon drizzle cake to cheer myself up, but I will be back.

To clarify:
Are car boots worthwhile?
What is worth ebaying?
Can you help me organise a plan of attack, and motivate DH to help?
Thank you.....

What about joining Freecycle and offering it to people for nothing? Better than chucking it, less hassle than ebay, especially for stuff that isn't really worth much.

misdee · 20/01/2007 15:07

yes freecycle is a good idea. also consider calling the BHF as gthey sometimes have vans and will collect stuff as well. some stuff is worth ebaying (next clothes bundles in good condition go well). shred paperwork.

We had a massive blitz of our spare room yesterday which was full of boxes from when we moved.
I've salvaged 2 pairs of dh's snowboard boots, 2 old mobile phones which seem to be selling for quite good money and a batch of ds's baby clothes. I'm sticking them all on ebay because we could do with the extra cash.
If you have the time and patience write a list of everything you want to sell with decriptions, take your photos and then if you have alot of things get 2 hours to yourself, uninteruppted and list it all on ebay. Yes you'll have to faff with posting them but IMO its well worth it in the end.
Other little bits that you dont think are worth putting on ebay, give to charity shops.

I know the feeling skyler, i have just spent two hours filling bags with complete crap for the dump, two bags for charity shop and a load of stuff for ebay.
The trouble with these MQs is that they don't have a lot of storage in them.

will join you in rant. We moved into this house 18 months ago with intention of renting it for 6 months then moving and we are still here. I have had no idea how long we will be staying all the time we have been here so I've never unpacked fully. The garage is still full of packing boxes and general crap, have no idea what is in some of the boxes. Still have boxes in wardrobes and in the dining room I very inventively put a tablecloth over 2 big boxes when MIL came and they are still there covered in it. Drives me spare.

Thank you for the ideas. I am going to register with Freecycle and sit dh down and set aside a day next weekend where I can sort while he looks after the children and organises food. I will contact BHF too Misdee as I know they have a shop near us. I buy a lot on ebay too so I should sell as I have the Paypal account set up etc and like you Yellow Feathers the cash would be good, even if it just means some guilt free shopping on ebay.
Thank you also for the sympathy!
Saltire - Yes the quarters are rubbish for storage esp as we are in a fairly new one. I have to say the older quarters are great for storage though. We really need some more furniture but it is difficult to buy when I know we will be moving again to a different house and there is the whole prob of things fitting etc. It just puts me off spending the money. I need to get over this though or we will still have mismatched hand me downs when we are 50.
Mrs F How unsettling it must be for you. I felt a bit the same with our first posting as we were sure it would be a short one and so didn't unpack everything, then Cyprus was only supposed to be a year but got extended. I actually know we will be here for 3 but that still doesn't seem long enough for me to invest money in the place like doing a patio or digging beds in the garden or putting fencing up or decorating.
Anyway dd1 and I made MarsLady's lemon cake which is cooking now and I feel better now. At least I have achieved something today!
