2 year old DD got out onto the road today - can't stop thinking about it....

That's it really. Was practising the clarinet in the front room in the mistaken belief that DH was watching DD (2.1) in the back of the house/garden wherever she happened to be. not so - he hadn't noticed she'd gone into the garden. I said to him the other week that she could move the barrier we'd put up at the side, so she MUST be watched in the garden as she could get out. Unfortunately he has stopped listening to me and yep, she got out. Luckily, I saw a blonde heard heading towards the road out of the corner of my eye, and, screaming, ran out of the house (you have never seen a 35 weeks pregnant woman move so fast) and caught up with her on the pavement. It's quite a busy road (by NZ standards).

I just can't stop thinking about it . What if I hadn't seen her, what if the people who lived behind us had turned into the drive, bla bla bla, am crying again now (cried for about 40 minutes straight afterwards). And am just furious with DH.

we're just shit parents aren't we. I'm kind of typing this out here in the hope that I'll feel better once I've written it all down, and that it's happened to someone else....we are obviously going to get round to having a proper gate fitted, but with DH at the moment, feels like I can't trust him to do anything really as he is so FUCKING absent minded. It's driving me mad.

Mrs JC this happened to us this weekend (ds is 2) so I know exactly how you feel, I wasnt here but whilst dh was in kitchen he just opened front door and legged it. Luckily he only got as far as next door before dh caught up with him. (the dog was by his side bless)

I know what you mean, I couldnt sleep, felt sick with worry about what could have happened.

Now keep door permanently locked and new stair gate up so he cant make another break for freedom

suedonim, my younger brother did that! Front door was on the latch (aah, those were the days, when you could leave your front door on the latch) and he somehow managed to pull it open using the bottom bolt and crawled out, down the steps, down the path and onto the pavement where a passing woman tripped over him. He was about 10 months old

oh thanks so much everybody. Feeling better today and we appear to be talking to each other...

we have several family stories about how I escaped as a baby, including one where someone fished me out of a river and returned me to the family asking 'is this yours?'
I am really hoping that this has shaken DH up properly. It appears to have, he has promised to tackle his current chronic migraine problem by addressing his diet; I actually think this has a lot to do with his current spaced out mood. He's also looking for a job, he hasn't worked for ages, and I think he is a person who needs a job to keep his mind working. He seems to have realised that he needs to step up to the mark - thank goodness!

not being funny, but you worrying about this is a sign of a good parent..accidents happen...it's when you think it's norml tthere is a problem!

Thats right, I would be worried if you weren't concerned. This sort of thing happens to us all at some point you know.
