To park or not to park. This is the question.......

When you wish to park and you find a spot on a road and there is a car or cars behind you that have to stop in order for you to park, do you

a) park your car, even though they have to wait

b) indicate, stop then indicate the other way and drive off, abandoning the space because to hold the other driver while you park is inconsiderate

me and dh argue about this.

one of us believes that it is perfectly ok to expect that a driver behind you will wait while you park - it is only a couple of minutes and we all have to do it at times.

the other believes that to hold other drivers at all is inconsiderate and they don't like holding anyone and they would rather leave the space and go round looking for another space.

who is right and who is an idiot?

A) park

although only if it's an easy space and I stand a reasonable chance of not making a total mess of getting my car in it. I'm cr*p at parking.

I think it's normal to wait for someone to park their car provided they don't ar$e about and take too long.

a)

otherwise everyone spends the whole afternoon driving round the car park and not parking their car

southeastastra · 16/01/2007 10:16

well it's nice of you to ask! round here they couldn't care less how much traffic they stop. i think it's ok as long as you make some gesture that you appreciate people waiting, not just park with no thanks to the waiting cars.

Cappuccino · 16/01/2007 10:16

I can tell from your rhetoric however that dh has the opposite opinion - did I crack your code?

Generally a, but if it's a really busy road and the parking spot is very tight (ie I'll be fannying about trying to get in, and embarrassing myself) then b.

flutterbee · 16/01/2007 10:17

a) obviously

madmarchhare · 16/01/2007 10:17

yes, I thought that

foxinsocks · 16/01/2007 10:17

a) otherwise how do you ever park?

I will say though, what I HATE is when people do this and put on their hazard lights as if I'm a f'ing mind reader and will be able to decifer the hazards meaning 'I want that space'.

Why can't they just signal left (if the parking is on the left) for example. Hazards to me either mean the car is buggered and I'm stopping in the road or I'm leaving the car here or something of that ilk.

quadrophenia · 16/01/2007 10:18

although the answer is obviously a, I am crap at parking so would end up driving off wouldn't want anyone to see just how useless i am!

mytwopenceworth · 16/01/2007 10:20

was i not subtlety itself then Cappuccino?

a) Though only if there is already an empty space.

It infuriates me when people sit and hold everyone up, waiting for a space to come available (ie when they spot someone getting into car)

Jessajam · 16/01/2007 10:22

If I can drive straight into the space forwards (a) if it will involve parallel parking I will often resort to
(c) - drive on, with no indicating, looking wistfully in rear view at the space and hoping that by th etime you've gone round the bvlock and come back the space will still be there and there will be no one around to watch you cock up trying to park in it...

mytwopenceworth · 16/01/2007 10:25

my husband says you are very reasonable and balanced people. he adds that he is surprised by this as he has always thought you were a bunch of loonies.

a) always - and I don't care how long I hold people up!(though my road is very wide so they can get around anyway).

I have no off-street parking and there is no residents parking either so lots of people working/shopping in town park here. If I was to drive around and wait till no-one was behind me, I can guarantee that any spaces I had seen would be gone.

I also have no qualms about double-parking to unload shopping. No way of getting it from car to door otherwise...

TheArmadillo · 16/01/2007 13:22

a
cos round my house spaces are like gold dust.

nikkie · 16/01/2007 14:23

a) unless it will take me ages or there is a masssive queue building while I park (couple of cars is ok)
