I am so stressed by this because I don't know if I lost them outside or in the house. All I know is that I had them last night (drove home) and I think I took them outside this morning (I usually do) so I could get in if the door slammed shut - it was blowing a gale and I was clearing up somebody's paper shreddings that had blown into our front. I came back in and got ready for school and when we went to go, no keys to be found. I took the spares and thought I'd look for them on my return.

They have not turned up and I'm sick with worry that they've been dropped outside and perhaps got into the wrong hands.

I don't know what to do..........I can't imagine we can afford to replace the locks on a double glazed 5 bolt lock door and also to replace the car locks either (central locking system).

On the other hand, it's likely that they are still inside the house - ds2 (nearly 3) could have taken them, but he says he doesn't know where they are.

I have looked everywhere I can think of including in the bin and through the recycling before the rubbish collectors came.

What do you advise o wise mners??

Aero - sympathies. I lose my keys every single day and dh despairs of me. I have lost them in maajor ways like you have lost yours, but they have always turned up eventually.

Just a thought for the security of your car: is dh arriving home in a car he could place in front of yours so no-one could drive your car away? Or could you ask a neighbour to park their car in front of yours? Just a thought. Also, can you bolt your doors from the inside so that even if someone had a key, they couldn't get in? Or get dh to leave his key in the lock inside the door when he comes home. I know one of our doors, if you do this, the key doesn't work from the outside (dh is always worried when he is late back that I will leave my key in the lock and prevent him getting in!)

I think if an opportunist had picked them up with the intention of nicking the car, they would have chanced their arm and taken the car there and then.

Aero · 11/01/2007 22:22

I will give the police a call tomorrow too misdee, although our local branch is no longer local, so I doubt anyone'd go to the trouble of handing them in, but you never know.

St G - that's what I was thinking re the house too. I'd gone in the car, leaving the house free to anyone who had a key handy!

DDG - we only have one car, but might park it further down the road, or on the drive of a vacant house across the road maybe.

I did think of leaving a key on the inside of the lock for a few nights - even one that fits the lock, but won't turn it (because I'm totally paranoid now).

I think we are managing to rule out an opportunist thief having picked them up then.

Have you got any extra crook locks or the like you can put in the car tonight?

Or have you got a personal 'screech' alarm? If you have you can rig it sneakily to the car door so if anyone opens it they will be deafened (also an extra loud alarm for you to hear from the house)

Aero · 11/01/2007 22:35

If the car's still there in the morning, I think I'll buy a crook lock tomorrow!

Nothing to screech though, but we do have a (non working) burgaler alarm box on the front of the house, which might deter any potential intruder.

Any luck yet, Aero?

mylittlestar · 12/01/2007 12:42

Still no luck??

charliecat · 12/01/2007 18:35

Got them?

Cadbury · 12/01/2007 19:05

paulaplumpbottom · 12/01/2007 19:05

Ask the kids, you might be suprised. My DD always knows where things are.

doormat · 12/01/2007 19:09

Sorry, been busy all day. No keys . I have come to the conclusion that they must either have gone with the rubbish, or are in the house and will turn up in 3.5 years time somewhere really weird (like the back of my knickers drawer, right Cadders?)

While this is what I hope has happened, I can't help still feeling a bit worried that someone may have picked up the keys, so with that in mind I've taken a little precaution with the car and will be leaving a key that won't turn in the lock of the porch door at night.

Today has been costly. New front door keys cut £12, New car key ordered, £58, and a crook lock £25!! Ouch!!!

Sad
Cadbury · 13/01/2007 16:45

Oh love, I feel sure they will turn up still. (Have you checked your knicker drawer btw?)Did you chat to th neighbours?

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

NannyL · 13/01/2007 18:17

i really hope you find them soon... its a nightmare to loose your keys (i loose mine too tho they normally turn up quite soon)

will post this though...although it may NOt be what you want to here

just last weekend my stp dads niece was burgled... they left their keys in back door that was locked but they used the cat flap and got the keys and broke (well unlocked the door from the outside and wlaked in) in downstairs while they were asleep upstairs... took stuff like handbags (with lots of money and xmas vouchers in) a few CDs and playstation games etc

but their insurance will not pay out cause there was no forced entry

therefor be very careful to use any extra locks u have... could u put a lock on the inside of your front door and leave out of the back for example? so at least then there would be a isgn of forced ntry and you will still be insured?

just an idea

paulaplumpbottom · 13/01/2007 18:29

I'm suprised they did't show up right after you shelled out some money.

Aero · 14/01/2007 22:18

Me too paula - but still no sign.........

Thanks NannyL - we're living in hope that they're not in the wrong hands - the car is still here!

dizzydo · 15/01/2007 15:38

Just to say Aero that I know it always feels like you are going to be burgled the second you loose your keys but I think it is fairly unlikely. i have had people ring on my front door to tell me the keys have been left in the lock!! Also, just before Christmas my husband found some keys on the pavement outside our house and we put big notices on the lamposts and asked our neighbours and logged it with the police but nobody ever claimed them. So try not to worry too much, a lot of people out there are still very honest.
Hope they turn up soon.

Aero · 16/01/2007 21:10

Thanks dizzy.

I might give the police a call - you never know.

Picked up my new spare key yesterday - £60!! Will be very careful in future!!
