What's the coil like?

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 15:56

Can I get a few opinions please about what it's like having a coil fitted etc. Does it hurt or just feel a bit freaky? and also how they feel once they are in situ. Can they come out? .. Have been on the pill for 19 years and feel it's time to get 'em out of my system.

Thanks

i was on the pill (microgynon) for about 17 years then switched to the coil 2 years ago.

the fitting really isn't as bad as you think it's going to be, just relax it's over with quickly and apart from feeling weird for a couple of days i found it settled in ok. i do get longer periods (and they seem more painful towards the end of my period!) and i do get pmt alot stronger, but it's worth it hth

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 16:05

Can you feel it in there though? I don't mean literally, I mean, within your body, can you feel there's something foreign floating about IYSWIM?

no, not at all, that was the thing that worried me about it too, but i can't feel it!

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 16:10

Thanks southeast that was my main fear.

my doctor wants me to have one fitted as i have v heavy periods and she reckoned it would stop them- it doesnt necessarily then???
wwob- my sil 's coil 'fell out' on boxing day!!!! no idea how or why and didnt want to 'go there' frankly!

i am scared of having it done too, mostly because embararassment factor of having it done during my period, which is what my doctor suggested. that just seems so so wrong to me! i know i know i've given birth 3 times and the whole world has seen what i have to offer (!) but thats different isnt it? no ones forcing me to have this thing done and nothing excitings going to come of it---- perhaps i wont bother

southeastastra · 10/01/2007 16:17

does your dr want you to have the mirena coil then ilmbbh? i've got the non hormonal one.

they can be 'expelled' but as far as i know (or have read) if it'll happen it will be in the first couple of months.

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 16:22

Which can be expelled? I think they have to do it during the period because the cervix is open. The nurse explained to me today that I should phone on the fifth day of my next period and come in and she and Dr. B will do it....I had to ask as I didn't know what the procedure was "Erm....why does it take two people?" (Can't tell you the horrible scenarios I was imagining!) She explained "He does it, I'm just here to to say hi (!) , no, just to watch on as it's a intimate procedure.

So, an audience as well? that'll be nice then!

oh, i'm not sure. it sounds familiar. i thought there was only one type! i dont need it for contraception as hubbies had the snippety snip, just to try and control my periods (also get v bad pmt- depression for 2 weeks etc) - her other suggestion was a hysterectomy -I'm only 31 FFS!!!! not sure she was on that day- perhaps she was having a bit of a moment! does seem a bit drastic doesnt it?!

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 16:32

Hhhm! A bit, there are lots of options aren't there? Injections and stuff? I'm just after something hormone free (I have plenty of those already!!)

they must mean the mirena as the normal coil makes periods heavier. both types can come out but i don't think it's that common. i had a dr and a nurse watched when i had it put it. i just shut my eyes and it was over quickly! they've seen it all before haven't they?

Callisto · 10/01/2007 16:41

I love my coil - it is a fab form of birth control and I am never aware of it. The fitting is a doddle - no worse than a smear.

kittypants · 10/01/2007 16:44

its given me heavier periods but i prefer it as its just there,i dont need to think about it.

LIZS · 10/01/2007 17:19

No you don't feel it in situ although the insertion can be uncomfortable. Is the dr male ? If so he may have the nurse as a chaperone . Mirena does have a small dose of hormone so it may not be the one you would prefer if the pill is no longer for you , although the doseage is lower and it is absorbed locally.

Celery · 10/01/2007 17:31

Mirena, the hormone one, usually makes your period lighter or non existent. The non-hormone one often makes periods heavier.

The hormone in the Mirena is only progesterone ( like the mini pill ). The normal pill has both progesterone and oestrogen. I couldn't take the normal pill because of the oestrogen, and was okayish on the mini-pill. Mirena only has a seventh of the progesterone of the mini pill. Even so, some women still have problems because of the hormone.

I like it though, and I haven't had a period since I had in put in.

scorpio1 · 10/01/2007 17:50

i love mu coil-a mirena

i no longer am a complete cowbag for a week before period time.

my periods are sooo light and only last a day,if that.no pain either.before mirena they were agony and 8 days long

it feels a bit crampy when you have it in for a few hours. and then you wont notice it!

i had two females in the room with me. think its to doubly check thats that all they did they are very discreet and quick

and no,you cant feel it it there at all.just check strings after period to check its still there

theyre great!

wildwomanofblackpool · 10/01/2007 19:40

What are the downsides of progesterone?

glitterdolphin · 10/01/2007 22:22

I don't like hormones at all. I tried several types of pill and they all gave me migraines, nausea etc. I have a copper coil in and I haven't had any problems (been in for 3 years now.) Hope this helps.

Goodasgold · 10/01/2007 22:38

For birth control I recommend the coil, yes the fitting is like smear and its like period pain afterwards, take nurofen or something. It was great for me. No more I just want more babies now! Three months after having it removed I was pregnant.
My sister had a nightmare with hers though, her local health authority settled out of court, are you ready for this, only read if you are... they removed her IUD surgically from her stomach.
Still she is now pregnant with her db2 so not ruined her life.

Furball · 11/01/2007 06:56

I looooove my mirena and am on my second one! Had the first 4 1/2 years. Yes fitting is uncomfortable - take painkillers before you go it's never as bad as you think it's going to be. Not had a period since first fitting and even when it was changed only had very light bleeding for a day or two which to me is worth it just for that never mind the added extra of birth control.

Celery · 11/01/2007 08:15

Downsides of progesterone aren't normally as bad as with oestrogen. Every woman is different though. If you have problems with the normal pill though, don't assume you can't take progesterone only contraception. I'm fine with it.
