shrewsbury itself is lovely but it floods terrible there. You have to be really careful. We were going to buy a house buy the river when we were younger. Itr was a gorgeous 3 storey grade 2 listed building. We didnt buy it. The year later shrewsbury had the worst floods in history and this house was submerged nearly all the way under water, glad we didnt buy it then! But it is a lovely plave to live. I know someone who lives in Ironbridge, but they have similar probs with floods. Much Wenlock is nice and Church streeton. Ludlow is gorgeous. I know we have a friend who lives more rural shrewsbury but I cant remember ths damn name of the place, I will ask my husband when he comes home! Are you being relocated for work?

Janh · 27/05/2004 09:33

I went to Bridgnorth once (she adds, helpfully )

That was lovely but I don't know how near it is to Shrewsbury. Or if it floods.

I live about 12 miles north of Shrewsbury in a little place called Wem. There is hardly anything here really, and what there is, the shops are very expensive. Shrewsbury itself is great but like fio2 says, you have to be careful because of the floods. My sister went to Greenfields primary school there and she said it was really nice there. There are quite a few secondary schools in Shrewsbury as well, Mary Webb, Meole Brace, Wakeman etc. We are also looking into moving to Shrewsbury as Wem is too small for me. I am a city girl at heart!! If you need anymore help, contact me through the contact talker facility. I know where most places are in Shrewsbury and what the areas are like. I used to live in Herongate which was great and just 10 minutes walk from the town, but nice fields nearby as well so we had the best of both worlds!! Good luck!!

My family are from Shrewsbury. I really like it, although its a bit frustrating sometimes now that Im used to London life! You can contact me with questions if you want, otherwise I'll end up writing a huge synopsis on hre!!

thanks ever so much
we're not being relocated so much as wanting to relocate ourselves!
I work from home so can be fairly flexible (at the moment we live in south manchester/cheshire).
DP works in cheshire but the problem is that there is nothing round here house wise with a nice sized garden. Some very good friends of ours have moved to near welshpool and have the most gorgeous barn conversion with loads of land and it just got us thinkig.
plan would be for DP to commute (about 60 miles) probably stay over with friends for two nights a week and then look for a job nearer say B'ham.
At first we thought it was a mad idea but I had a look at some houses and they looked gorgeous
thanks for the flooding tip though, I didn't realise that at all.
Does anyone know a village called 'westbury?'

janh i love your Bridgnorth comment! did you go bikers night?

Katierocket have never heard of westbury. But if you are concerned about floods just rememeber that anywhere nearish to the river severn is liable to flood. It is a monster of a river and quite honestly scares me sometimes. Is it just Shropshire in particular you are looking at? Welshpool is incredibly cheap isnt it?

Fio2 · 27/05/2004 13:15

did you go to bridgnorth on bikers night, should say! doh!

NomDePlume · 27/05/2004 13:15

Near Welshpool ?!!! I spent my (miserable) teenage years in Newtown, just up the road !

busybee123 · 27/05/2004 13:16

westbury is nice but there is nothing there at all and if you cant drive, buses dont run to shrewsbury that often and they are the old rickety ones!!

katierocket · 27/05/2004 13:17

well, the idea was to move to nearish our friends so it would be kind of surrounding welshpool, we've only just started looking so not really set on anywhere yet, I just love the countryside down there - so beautiful.
The house our friends have would be worth about £800k in cheshire and they got it for £220k - I was gobsmacked. I shall have a look at ludlow and much wemlock.

Fio2 · 27/05/2004 13:18

Ludlow is expensive though. Much Welock is a bit cheaper

Fio2 · 27/05/2004 13:18

much wenlock even

katierocket · 27/05/2004 13:19

shoudl have said, probably don't want to go too much further south than shrewsbury or welshpool

Shrewsbury now has flood defences as does Ironbrdge, Most of teh villages are lovely

oswald · 27/05/2004 19:47

I moved to Shrewsbury from Manchester 6 months ago and I'm enjoying it - we relocated ourselves as well and have had a few wobbles about missing friends but generally really pleased we did it.The schools seem good, there are some problems with floods in some areas but its pretty easy to work out where and I can always help if you need any info on that. There's a lot going on for mothers and toddlers and kids generally,my DD1 goes to a brilliant nursery, beautiful town. I personally didnt fancy living in a village I wanted a bit more available to me but I have friends who do particularly North Shropshire villages so can always get the lowdown if you want some info. Let me know you can always contact me directly when I've changed my profile saying I didnt want to be contacted, which I dont remember doing. If you're thinking of anywhere specific I can find out a bit more.Good luck deciding !

katierocket · 27/05/2004 20:40

thats interesting oswald, why did you pick shrewsbury from manchester? (as in why shropshire?) does your DH/DP commute too or found new job?

thanks again everyone, really useful stuff

If it's not too far south for you then check out Bridgnorth. It's a lovely little town about 20 mins from Shrewsbury. The Severn does flood badly so wouldn't recommend living too close to river. Schools are good. Nice park. Picturesque. Good market on Saturdays. Severn Valley Railway great for entertaining kids!

oswald · 27/05/2004 22:59

My DH found a new job in Shrewsbury - he can walk to work 20 mins, he's always hated commuting so its great, has to be in Birmingham or places further afield now and again but mostly here. We decided on here because I came to visit friends down here who had moved from Manchester and really liked it. I had been before because I had been to school in a north shropshire village for 6th form - it was boarding school ( I liked the area not going to boarding school/prison -but that's a whole other thread). I knew Shrewsbury a bit, and that area a bit more but knew I didnt want to live in a village. My DH's dad was in the forces and they lived on a base in Shrops. for a few years. We had already explored living in a different part of Manchester but couldn't find anywhere we liked. Basically we were up for a change, didnt want to be in a big city to bring up kids,we knew a few people here already so we wouldn't be completely friendless. We were lucky my DH saw great job advert in his field, got the job and so within a few months of me coming back from friends and saying what a nice place it would be to live and a lot of trips down to find a house, we are living here and we both feel it was the right decision - most of the time!

meanmum · 27/05/2004 23:16

Don't know about Shrewsbury the Iron Bridge near Telford (which is near Shrewsbury) is fantastic and I recommend you go and see it if you can.

katierocket · 28/05/2004 18:53

sounds very similar to our situation oswald - in terms of why you opted for that area, will keep you all posted and no doubt be back with further questions.
