Has being left-handed held you back in life in any way? I'm just musing back over the years, maybe because I'm reaching a milestone soon!

I'm the only l/handed person in my family, going back quite a few generations. Lefties are supposed to be more 'artistic', but I've never felt that at all, really. I started learning acoustic guitar at school on a r/handed guitar (not being told or realising there was a l/handed option - more expensive tho) and I never really mastered it properly. I gave it up completely before ds was born in 1999 and it's gathering dust in the garage.

Never been that brilliant at sports (l/handed at everything, but right-eyed!), always find playing cards difficult.

This is all negative and I'm sure I can come up with some pros for being l/handed, so any thoughts?!

No, b/c I am a bit ambidextrous.

I eat and write w/my left hand, but can only do many other things - use scissors, swing a racket, bat, golf club, etc., play musical instruments and so on, right-handed.

DD2 is already right-handed, but DD1 appears ambidextrous like me.

I'm very left handed. Can barely hold a pen in my right hand, but don't feel like I've been "held back". In fact I look at all the stuff marketed for left handers and wonder how I ever survived childhood

I have my computer mouse set up for left handers, would quite like a keyboard with the number pad on the left, use left handed dressmaking scissors for accurate pattern cutting (but ordinary scissors for every ting else) and can see the point of a ruler that numbers from right to left. But I grew up with none of these things. And managed just fine.

I'm not in the least artistic, and I'm also appallingly clumsy, but I've never related that to being lefthanded. In fact, I had to go for some special tests when I was very young because I was so bad, but they couldn't identify a cause. The concensus of opinion was that I'm just really clumsy

jodee, Sharlene Spiteri from Texas is a lefty but plays guitar right handed so don't give up girl, go dust it off!!!

jodee · 08/01/2007 13:28

Is she, Ulysees?? Blast, was looking for an excuse to flog it!

Actually, I use a computer mouse r/handed extremely well, but can't get to grips with the numberpad, becky. I'm very clumsy too!

Just thought that I do eat r/handed with a knife and fork, but spoon is always in the left hand.

Dh is very lefthanded from a v lefthanded family (sounds like you beckybrastraps), so much so that we joke that his right hand is like those little arms that t-rex had. He broke his left wrist once, and it was a nightmare. It doesn't seem to be a problem though - he has left-handed scissors (which drive me crazy when I accidentally pick them up) but otherwise gets by without any other lh gadgets. Ds1 (6) is left-handed and I am just starting to be concerned about his learning to write - his writing is fine but at the moment, he writes in pencil but has not got the hang of tilting the page etc so if he were to use a pen it would smudge really badly. Any tips on getting him to move his pencil/page so he will get in the habit of not smudging?

I'm left handed and quite arty farty, never found it a problem. Was good when playing rounders at school cos I could switch to my left hand at the last minute, whack the ball and run like billyho, while all fielders ran to other side of pitch. Only thing I can't do is use a fountain pen but it hasn't held me back in anyway!

I was left handed, but had a mean teacher a primary school. So now write, right handed, use knives left handed.

It seems to be the girls in our family that are left handed;

MIL
Me
DD1
DD2

DH. FIL, BIL, DS are all right handed.

I can be quite arty but have to think about it, MIL is arty (she used to lots of really intricate cake decorating, and make cake decorations to sell in a local shop), DD1 and DD2 are also arty and love drawing. We're all quite practical too.

The menfolk are not in the least bit practical or arty, don't ever ask them to co-ordinate anything.

DD appears to left handed or ambidextrous.

I am left handed for writing, but do lots of things (play tennis, throw balls, use scissors etc.) with my right hand.
I am a musician (although totally crap with stringed instruments!) and also a pretty good artist. Being left handed can be quite an advantage in playing the piano as well.
My mother is lefthanded, as is my aunt, and DD is now showing every sign of being lefthanded too (which I am secretly rather pleased about for some weird reason). It hasn't EVER caused me any problems, haven't ever needed any left handed products either.
