Free standing gas cookers. How necessary/useful is the lid on the hob?

We're looking at free standing gas cookers. Most of them have a glass lid on the top. We're considering getting one without a lid on the top or else taking the glass lid off when we buy one.

The reason for that is because we don't use an electric kettle and currently have a whistling kettle which sits permanently on top of the gas hob.

But, we realise it may be foolish to choose or deface our new cooker on the basis of kettle choice so I thought I'd better find out how useful/necessary/desirable/pointless the lid really is.

You can keep the glass lid up all the time. Bonuses are that it keeps the wall behind the oven free from splashes (glass is dead easy to clean) and you can put it down if you need more surface for something.

I do know that when the glass lid is even slightly less than 90 degrees upright, the gas is cut off to the rings as a safety measure (took me a while to work that one out, I have to confess ) so I am not sure if removing it would be viable, depending on how the cut-out works.

My advice is.. buy an electric kettle!
