Evening wedding reception - do I buy something?

So - I have an evening wedding recption to go to. I've met her only at parties and met her only 4, 5 times tops. Nice girl, got on well, been invited to her evening wedding reception.

Do I get her a gift?

I have to add here that I am stupidly skint and very overdrawn. I could really do with out the expense but don't want to offend.

Are you supposed to buy a gift when you go to the evening reception or not.

Help!!!!!!!!

Something small, maybe a photoframe?

NomDePlume · 25/05/2004 12:06

I would, and people did for our wedding reception. We're off to a reception on Friday and like you, I've only met them a handful of times. We're taking a bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champers and a card for them.

I would say that it needn't be anything extravagant, a non bank breaking £10 - £15 price range seems perfectly acceptable to me.

You could try asking for her wedding list and see if she says not to worry about a present.

Otherwise maybe club together with some others for a joint pressie?

I can't really be bothered with evening receptions if I haven't been invited to the wedding itself, but I am noone's role model!

you are supposed to but i would not want a friend to break the bank to buy me one would you? take a card that would do

CountessDracula · 25/05/2004 12:11

Yes I agree would go for a bottle of champagne or some small token. If they have a wedding list you could get something small from that?

KateandtheGirls · 25/05/2004 12:11

You definitely need to take something, but it doesn't need to be extravagant, just a token gift. If you can't afford anything then don't go.

Crunchie · 25/05/2004 12:35

I agree with the other a small gift is fine. A nice silver plated photoframe is usually under a tenner (and you always need loads of new frames after a wedding). Or what about a small funky Cath Kidson/Emma Bridgewater thig like a tea towel or egg cups. Things that you wouldn't buy yourself, but are nice to have

Or you could get Lottie to paint her a couple of mugs and you print the date on them. So personal and everyone needs more mugs A 2nds china shop has mugs at about £2 and you can get ceramic paints from art shops for about £7 a set (leaving you loads left for other random inexepnsive gifts)

Not meaning to sound terribly mean but do you not have an old pressie someone has bought you that you have never used and is still in its box??

(Now no one is ever going to invite me to a wedding again!!)

Thomcat · 25/05/2004 13:00

Thanks girls. Ceramic mugs sound like a great idea but won't have time. Will do photo frame, or even nice little album, or chamgane. Don't know how to get hold of her to get list. I barely know her!

If it isn't someone you know well I'd just go for something small but nice.

I have 3 evening recpetions coming up but all family (getting married either in register offie or abroad, hence not at service) so have to buy 3 proper pressies for them.

At our wedding people did buy us pressies whether they came just to the evening bit or o whole thing.

I agree, a ceramic photo frame, napkin rings, or something like that, you can't go empty handed!
