Most 'New Towns' have a lot of ex council housing.

Yes, the houses in Stevenage & Letchworth are mostly ex-council, some are quite nice and others look really grotty.

If I look at 2 beds, then Herts is looking more promising! Still considering Southampton & Portsmouth areas.

Have you looked on vebra - I much prefer it to RightMove.

There are several Mners around the Stevenage/Letchworth area, so if you want to know about a particular place then it's worth asking on here.

You may find an occasional house in Hitchin for your budget, but not many.

Luton would be affordable and good for transport links, but there aren't many parts of it that I would choose to live in.
