Have never been to a Christening before and have no idea what sort of things are 'acceptable'. She's a really good friend so I don't want to turn up with something rubbish, though can't really spend loads. Any ideas? Please!!

When dd was christened, the gifts we received where silver photo frames/albums, money boxes, baby bracelets/necklaces, clothes, and money. HTH

I think in the past there used to be quite a lot of silver, particularly from the godparents or family members. Some people give stuff for when the baby's grown up, some give things for now.
Mine were given things like a boxed set of Beatrix Potter books, a china mug and baby bowl (Wedgewood do nice ones and also Bunnikins are nice, I think they're Royal Doulton - and not too expensive but a bit special), piggy banks, a clock, and other nice hardback books like Alice in Wonderland.

My dds both recieved silver "tooth boxes" to leave their teeth in under their pillows for the tooth fairy! They both love them now although only dd1 has started dropping teeth!

Silver is classic and lovely. If you have yogurt knitting treehugging tendencies like me then i always give certificate showing trees planted in their name by the Woodland Trust (here . In theory they could go and visit it.

WE had a huge amount of different presents for DD's christening including:

clothes
silver money boxes (got about 6!)
Stainless steel cutlery
silver napkin holder
Royal Doulton plate
silver bracelet - for when DD is older
Age appropraite toys
Book sets for when she is older - Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Rabbit, etc.
Soft toys
Other silver things - first tooth holders, first curl holders, etc.

My favourite presents for my DS 1 & 2 were books. Ones that they can keep when they are older and ones that you can add to the collection. The children get more out of books because they wont just sit there gathering dust. When i speak to friends about suitable presants the opinion has been (not necesarilly my opinion!) that money boxes and christening spoons, egg cups etc are a bit old hat
