URGENT getting credit when unemployed

I had enough savings to buy a product outright but as I may have some other expenses soon I decided to apply for credit. I have a good credit rating but am not working. I feel really stupid now because in the shop it advertised these spread the cost plans and said subject to status which presumably means you have to be working.

I got halfway through applying and was then asked for my job details. Partly because I felt embarassed for thinking I could have stuff on credit when I probably cant whilst unemployed, partly because I felt I would have wasted the staffs time after they'd done so muhc of the form already and partly because of habit, (whenever people aske what I do I state my profession even though I'm not working at the moment as I have qualifications which enable to be self employed) and also I couldn't think straight as I was coming down with yet another illness so was burning up and struggling to breathe and nearly passing out as it was so hot in there, I didn't tell them I wasn't working and isntead gave the job title I would have if I was doing hat I am qaulified to do.

Have I broken the law? I was hoping it wouldn't be accepted but it was

Have also posted this elsewhere but am not on the internet at home solooking for a quick response while I am in library, thanks

I would imagine that as long as you put zero in the income box you will be okay.

Lying about that would be serious.

WideWebWitch · 28/12/2006 10:43

I'm no law expert and technically I suppose yes, you lied and made a false declaration but

a) if you can afford to pay it off, so what?
b) no-one will ever ask again now they've approved the application

So I'd say no harm done, stop worrying about it.

Could be classified as fraud but agree with others. Noone is going to check up on you, it's done so don't worry about it.

OOPs didn't put zeroin income box I guessed how much my benefits amounted to, thought that would be okay as it said income not earnins.

The trouble is ebeven if I don't get in trouble with this compnay, will the benefits people get in touch. The only ID I had with my address on that they would accept was a letter from HM revenues and customs, thought that would show suggest to them I was on benefit so surprised they accepted it.

I have not done any paid work at all, but what if benefits find out I have applied credit and think I am working and try to do me for claiming benefits by deception. I know I'm not but would I be able to prove I'm not working.

I am intending to take it back as its still unopened and only bought it yesterday but I suppose my details could still be passed on even if I do take product back and cancel agreement

Benefits figure would be fine then.

I don't think there will be any come back from HMR&C as there is no mechanism for credit lenders to communicate with them - so don't worry on that front.

I think if you are really worried and won't be able to let it go in your mind, then taking it back for peace of mind might be the best course of action.

You can always save up and buy it once you have the money

ok thanks, I am pregnant and findig this pregnancy really tough emotionally and I think its these hormones making me worry unnecessarily. Problems with partner also getting me down, he makes me feel so useless I feel like such a bad person and always have thes estupid thoughts that something bad will happen to me because I deserve to suffer

God, no way do lenders/shop girls who take your details to pass to their finance house pay ANY attention to what was on the letter from the IR! Look, you've got the credit, they won't need to do any more checking. The finance co will NOT contact the IR, why ever would they? And you're not working so what would happen even if they did?(Which they won't, honestly!)

I agree, if it's worrying you THAT much, take it back or just cut it upa nd don't use it but really, I don't think you've got anything to worry about!
