So What Is Life Really Like In England?

Hi there,

So I currently live in the Republic of Ireland but my dream is to live in England (it has been a dream of mine for a long time now and as a result have done lots of research) once I've finished school (I've 2 1/2 years to go!) but if not once I've graduated from college.

So I'm wondering what's life really like in England? My parents think I'm crazy for wanting to move but I feel that England is more suited to me as an individual as I hate how laid-back,crazy and unpunctual the Irish are (no offence to any fellow Irish people on Mumsnet!) and I prefer how much choice England seems to offer in terms of everything and also how much more organised and structured everything seems to be there Smile

Could anyone here give me the lowdown on every aspect of life in England- the good, the bad and the ugly!
After school I'm hoping to be either a primary teacher, a secondary teacher (most likely Biology and Chemistry), a children's nurse or something involving science, so could anyone also tell me what the working conditions are for these jobs if you are doing them in England?

Thanks in advance to those who gives me the lowdown on life in England- I will really appreciate it as I know that people who living in England itself (and wise Mumsnetters!) will be able to offer me actual, real advice about life in England ! Smile

(Sorry if this is in the wrong section- I couldn't find an appropriate section for it but if I know where it should go could someone please move it for me or tell me how to do it! Blush)

Originally I'm from the midlands and I've lived in the south west (Cheltenham LOVES Irish people) and now I like in the north.

If you're looking for something not rural but not coastal and in the Midlands then Worcester is lovely also Bristol so fab. It is near a big city but not too near. :)

Yes I might consider Scotland for university Smile to all of those who said that the Irish would be welcomed-thank you-it's much appreciated Grin I'm afraid I don't have much of an Irish accent though which is a good thing to me,I don't like the Irish accent too much

Don't go into teaching.

Move to Australia or New Zealand instead.

help - a joke about the English lack of front is good but in these days when so many things English are rubbished without anyone raising a bit of pride in their nation - it can be difficult to take. No-one would have made such a statement about the Welsh, Irish or Scottish Smile

OP it sounds like a really good idea. When I was at school I was desperate to live in Ireland and DH and I still talk about moving, though sadly our jobs don't exist there! We go on holiday there though still.

I'd suggest trying a few areas out during holidays when you are able - maybe South or East of Manchester where you'd have access to the Saddleworth moors but could work at a hospital such as MRI if you still wanted to nurse.

Try city breaks in Leeds, the Lakes and Wirral then explore the surrounding areas for quieter spots.

with nearly 70 million of us it is a bit difficult to generalise.

you'll find the bottom right hand corner to be incredibly crowded and expensive. It is where the crazy salaries are to be found but not, I fear, at 17. It is also where even those with the crazy salaries struggle to afford accommodation!

elsewhere there are plenty of spots where there is fresh air, but not constant rain (except today!), lots of space, lots to see and do, work, housing that can be afforded, transport, roads that aren't jammed 24/7 and so on.

I left the south-east. No regrets.

if you have problems, they follow you. Life is generally what YOU make it.
