my friend got married in a meadow in vermont

i think places still have to be licensed for marriage in this country?

Tommy · 19/12/2006 19:50

not yet dabhip - IIRC the law is coming soon that makes it possible to get married anywhere as long as you have a registrar like in Scotland) but until then, you have to get married inside

I had 2 weddings - registry to satisfy the legal requirment and a humanist ceremony outside. In a meadow. Next to a pub. Cos I am a godless hippy who likes a drink

Tommy · 19/12/2006 20:05

there has to be a door...... so it has to be inside

very silly isn't it?!

Yulemoonfiend · 19/12/2006 20:19

My friend got married outside this year. Was supposed to be getting married in the hotel but was beautiful day and held it outside. Gorgeous wedding and setting was beautiful near Ben Lomond in Scotland.

why dont you just go and get the legal stuff done in one afternoon in a reg office and then have a fab ceremony at your preferred location?

this is what we have to do to get married in majorca.

dabihp · 19/12/2006 20:48

arghh, no, dont want to go anywhere near a registry office... too formal...

OP posts:
tiredemma · 19/12/2006 20:51

no! just go in your jeans with dp and two mates, get the formalities out of the way and focus on a ceremony, dont make a big issue about the reg office, just treat it as if its going to get a passport at the passport office or opening a bank account.

dabihp · 19/12/2006 21:13

maybe emma , maybe

tiredemma · 19/12/2006 21:16

go on!

Dont make a big issue of the reg office, just put all of your effort into the ceremony.

PeachesMcLean · 19/12/2006 21:24

Tiredemma! It's getting married! It's a bit more interesting than opening a bank account (though in some ways sadly similar....) I know what you mean though, concentrate on the bit that's lovely rather than the legal bit but is there some way to combine both? There is a moment when you're not married and the next moment you are. Deserves celebrating there and then.
Depends on how far you want to travel I suppose?

dabihp · 19/12/2006 21:25

okay okay.. am runnign with this.. lol
but remembe rthe episode of friends where Joey got made a minister? i found the church, they ordain u instantly free online

I know peaches, of course it is important!! What we plan to do is just go to reg off with a couple of pals, do the deed and then just go for a meal, just the four of us. My main event will be just the day that I want, but not possible to have without the reg bit.

marriage is tres important though, i wont deny that!

PeachesMcLean · 19/12/2006 21:46

Sorry, didn't mean to come over all sincere and proper and traditional weddingy! I'm not that kind of person. Honest! The castle does look particularly gorgeous and I like the idea of choosing a venue to match the frock! Our answer to the reg office problem was to to do the deed then get straight out onto the lawns and crack open the champagne. Thankfully we were the last wedding of the day so the staff just locked up and left us to it.
How many people do you want with you dabihp?

dabihp · 19/12/2006 21:57

only close family.. inc kids its about 12/13 ppl

You can't legally be married outside. However, you can have a legal marriage and a ceremony. I had a legal marriage at Chelsea Town Hall (quite glam, actually, wore white Ghost dress and champagne tea at Brown's hotel afterwards) then a humanist ceremony (not as hippy as it sounds) and weekend house party in a beautiful house in Somerset. The legal bit coming first did not spoil the ceremony at all.

PeachesMcLean · 19/12/2006 22:05

Sounds good. Good luck with it, and I hope you enjoy the planning as much as the wedding itself. Very exciting stuff, especially when you completely choose what you want to do instead of going down the usual routes.
