Death of a pet dog - anyone know of any nice poems which might help my friend?

My frined's dog had died suddenly and I'm not entirely sure what to say.

Does any one know of a nice but not overly sentimental poem which may be suitable to send her?

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Faithful With eye upraised his master?s look to scan
The joy, the solace, and the aid of man:
The rich man?s guardian and the poor man?s friend
The only creature faithful to the end
(George Crabbe).

That didn't come out quite right!

Faithful

The only ones I can think of are Kiplings 'The power of the dog' and the one about the little dog angel . They always make me want to cry though so I'm not sure that's the effect you're looking for!

(btw, the angel one, the version I first saw was slightly different and the last line was 'his little terrier's welcoming bark, will comfort his soul in the shivering dark' which I think is much better).

I thought of the Kipling too, Pixel, but it makes me howl every time .

Yes, Kipling's 'Power of The Dog' will probably only make things worse - I tear up whenever I hear it and I haven't even got a dog:

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day,
And when we are certain of sorrow in store.
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a puppy and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Neverthe less it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumor, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns.
Then you will find- it's your own affair-
But... you've still given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
with its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone- wherever it goes- for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear

In Memory

They will not go quietly, the dogs who have shared our lives. In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.

Old habits still make us think we hear them at the door. Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be, And sometimes, coming home at night we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill, That one place in our hearts belongs to them...and always will.

Just lost my dear dog 2 months ago, and reading them all has made me weep all over again. Such moving poems...
Sorry I have none to share.

Another version of Rainbow Bridge

Do Not Mourn My Passing (author unknown)

Do not mourn my passing
For if you could only see
By slipping all my earthly bonds,
I'm young again and free.
By day I run the Heavenly fields,
My body healthy and strong.
At night I sleep at Angels' feet,
Lulled by Celestial song.
So do not mourn my passing,
Just close your eyes - you'll see
I'm once again that frisky pup,
Just as you remember me.
