URGENT - to anyone in London

This was sent out as a circular to my workplace:-

WARNING FROM KEITH BEASLEY/LONDON AMBULANCE SERVICE

For once, a serious message: We have received a warning at the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and have been asked to pass on the information to all of our families and friends.

The LAS have units closely associated with police D.A.R.E squads based in South London who are basically fighting 'Gang Crimes'.

The street gangs in London (particulartly South London at present, but it may spread) have initiation tasks which new gang members have to carry out to be admitted to the 'gang'. The latest craze is to drive around, deliberately with no lights on their cars. The first person who 'flashes' them, points at them or sounds their horn at them, has to be followed by that new gang member in their car, who then has to fire a shot into that vehicle!!!! with no regard as to whom is inside.

Our official instruction is that if we see a vehicle with no lights on, we are NOT to 'flash' it etc, and the advice to friends & family is that you should ignore any vehicles you see without lights.

I would ask that you pass this on to all of your family, friends and colleagues by phone or email and who knows, it may save a life!

It's a lovely world we live in, isn't it.

That was posted to me at work. I am so sad that I have to post this.

Wiltshire - just to reassure you and your colleagues - this is a hoax email which is based on an urban myth. See here .

wiltshire · 17/05/2004 22:51

Oh my god, I really thought I was warning people of this bloody danger. Well I take it back. I didn't write this email and I think that I am going to take a very dim view of the person who wrote it. I have not posted on Mumsnet for ages and really really thought I had something important to say. Sorry!

yeah, sorry you got caught with this hoax. we got sent it by one of our friends, the one who also believes there is a date rape pill that can leave u sterile. if you could become sterilised by taking a pill dont you think this would be a better option than an op??

Wiltshire - don't apologise! I know what you mean. I've been had by emails like that loads of times. They really do sound 'official". Dh showed me that Snopes websites and lo and behold there were most of the stories I'd been fretting about. You have to wonder what people get out of scaring people like that - it's a shame we can't trace these things

Wiltshire, even the Met got caught out and forwarded a hoax email about a cashpoint scam. I usually think if the police are mentioned it's a wind up but on this occasion, they really had forwarded it and were very embarrassed.
There are various websites that monitor hoax emails but can't remember them at the mo... basically though no official body is going to send important information via chain emails saying 'copy this to everyone you know' and using lots of exclamation marks. Hoaxes are usually full of spelling mistakes too.
