What's a good game to play in a restaurant? (grownups)

We're out for dinner with some other couples tomorrow which is a real rarity for us so I am nervous. My dh is quite shy and quiet and I tend to just drink too much so I thought maybe there might be a game I could subtly suggest to break the ice without being too ghastly about it. Kind of pretend I invented it there and then. Maybe?

littlemissbossy · 12/12/2006 17:44

Might your friends find this a bit cheesy?

MerryPiffmas · 12/12/2006 18:00

tequila slammers

How about getting napkins and "making" things? My DD and I did this once whilst waiting for food and it just makes you laugh. EG Earings, moustache, rabbit ears, bib etc etc. Need a few drinks first but it gets really competitive!!

yulemoonfiend · 12/12/2006 18:34

Hopefully you won't need them dion, and conversation will just flow and you'll have a fab night and wonder what you were worried about. But...

We often drunkenly end up playing song lists - (eg top ten songs for a rainy day, with 'It's Raining Men, here comes the rain again) etc or (recently) top 10 songs for a nervous breakdown (initiated by my friend who has had one! - with Paranoid Black Sabbath, They're coming to take me away etc)
Or better, play punny song lists along the lines of a recent MN thread where we had to insert fruit and veg into song titles/artists like Onion City Blues, or I Yam what I Yam

Last time we were at a dinner party we ended up playing Stinkety Pinkety - you think of a definition and the answer has to rhyme eg - an odourous dessert would be smelly jelly, or biased crafstmen - artisan partisan...it was fun, but maybe you had to be there...or be very drunk!

poinsettydog · 12/12/2006 19:10

That's stuff of nightmares for my dh - socialising in couples with strangers. He sometimes just refueses and I don't really blame him.

I can't think of games. Could you think up a few chat topics instead? Take the mn thread list

wickedwinterwitch · 12/12/2006 19:16

Erm, I think it sounds a bit cringey, you don't need to suggest games if you're nervous, could you ask questions about the people you're with, find ut what interests them and talk about that instead? Most people love talking about themselves.

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 12/12/2006 20:48

Oh God no, I wasn't going to put on an insane Stepford smile and say 'I know, let's play a game!'
Was just thinking on the lines of Yulemoonfiend's songlists or 10 songs about dogs or something. The ladies are my friends and if I can weedle it in somehow I know they will leap on it and start belting out songs (and will probably puke their puds too). I'm just worried about the DHs as they're all fairly quiet and men like to have a distraction, something to solve when they're stressed, don't they?
BTW my dad taught me how to make a bra out of a napkin when I was a kid! I will be doing that tomorrow too (did it with a terry nappy once at toddler group.)
