I need to write a birthday card to dd's school friend "Lexie", but it is spelled the complicated (gaelic?) way.

Does anyone know how I spell it?

Thanks.

Well Lexie means 'Grey lady'.

Liadan / Liadain is the name from legend of a Poetess called the Grey Lady so I am guessing it might be the name you mean.

Thanks St George.

It's something like Laicsaidh, but google doesn't even have that. Maybe they made it up!

I have been through loads of gaelic pages, there are very few names beginning with L.

I have a book somewhere, will have a quick look in there for you.

No joy in the book and this page suggests that there isn't a true equivalent.

Thanks for all your efforts St George

Very interesting. All the Lexi/Lexy/Lexies I've ever met have been short for Alexandra.

NYcicles · 12/12/2006 19:21

Luighseach? From here I don't know how you pronounce it though! HTH

NYcicles · 12/12/2006 19:31

Oh, sorry no that is pronounce "Loo-she", Lucy I guess.

NYcicles · 12/12/2006 19:47

I think Liadan is pronounce Lee-a-din or similar and is basically Lyndsay in English, not Lexie. Sorry, not being very helpful!

YuleTideways · 13/12/2006 18:33

Thanks NYcicles

I think they must have made-up the gaelic spelling. Perhaps you could ask your dd's teacher for the spelling. Please let us know as I am intrigued!

SherlockLGJ · 13/12/2006 18:44

Are you sure it is Lexie and not Laoise (Lee sha)

just spell it wrong .. give a child a stupid spelling and you can expect to get it wrong

people constantly get my name wrong and my daughters .. I expect it

KTreePee · 13/12/2006 18:47

I've never heard of it as an Irish name so also would think it is "made up". I have a friend who has a dd called Sarah but spelt in an extremely unusual way to look Irish... I still can't spell it myself.
